Acrostic Poem Generator

Type a word or a name and this lays out one line for every character in it, with that character holding the front of its own line. The letter sits outside the box you type in, so the initials down the left keep spelling your word no matter how much of the poem you rewrite, which is the part of an acrostic that is fiddly to keep right by hand. Each line opens with a starter assembled from two lists written into this page: 265 words sorted by first letter across four themes, and 96 line endings, each one authored twice so a plural word gets a plural verb. Nothing here is written by a language model, and nothing you type leaves your browser. A character with no Latin letter behind it, a digit or an emoji, keeps its place at the front of its line and is given no words at all, a space between two names gets an empty line, and X, the one letter with no word in any of the four lists, gets its letter and nothing after it rather than a word nobody would call a water word. The starters are a scaffold: swap the opening word from the list under the poem, or write straight over the line and keep the letter.

5 lines, one per letter, and the initials spell RIVER down the left. Every line is yours to rewrite.

The capital at the front of each line is fixed and sits outside the box you type in, so the initials keep spelling your word however much you rewrite. Click a line and the words that list holds for its letter appear underneath: choose one to rewrite the opening of that line, keeping the ending and its agreement. New lines rolls a fresh draw for every line you have not written yourself, and Copy takes the whole poem, blank lines included. Your word, the theme, the tone and the lines you write are kept in this browser so the page opens where you left it, and Start over at the top of the page forgets them.

  • RIVER, water theme5 letters
5 lines whose initials spell RIVER
  • A name with a spaceANA MARIA
9 lines: 8 letters and 1 blank line, every character kept as typed
  • A digit or an emojiinside the word
5 lines: 3 letters and 2 blank lines, every character kept as typed
Accuracy. Every line begins with the letter in its position, so the initials always spell exactly what you typed. Lines are assembled from a themed corpus written for this page and each one is editable in place. A character with no Latin letter gets an empty line for you to write rather than an invented one, and nothing on this page is produced by a language model. The four lists hold 265 words and 96 line endings between them, all written for this page, and X is the one letter none of the four has a word for, so that line always opens blank with its letter kept.

Common questions

Is the poem written by AI?
No, and the page does not pretend it is. The starter lines are assembled from two lists typed into this tool by hand: 265 words filed by their first letter across four themes, and 96 line endings, eight for each pairing of a theme with a tone. A line is one word from the list for that letter followed by one of that theme and tone's endings, picked by a seeded draw, and that is the whole of it. No model runs here, no request leaves your browser, and the words you type are not sent anywhere or counted by anything. The result is a scaffold with the right letters in the right places, meant to be written over.
Can the initials come out wrong after I edit a line?
They cannot. The letter for each line is held outside the field you type in, so editing changes only the rest of the line. That opening letter is capitalised, so typing river or River both spell RIVER down the left. Clear a line completely and you are left with the bare letter, ready for your own words. Change the word at the top and the lines rearrange to match it: any line you had already rewritten is carried over only if its letter is still in the same position, so a rewritten line never ends up sitting under a letter it does not start with.
What happens to a space, a digit or an emoji in a name?
It gets a line of its own, and it is kept exactly as you typed it. A digit, a piece of punctuation or an emoji opens its line and nothing is written after it, because no word list is filed under a unicorn. A space is the one character that gets a genuinely empty line, since a line holding nothing but a space would be an invisible line: ANA MARIA comes back as nine lines, eight of them letters and one empty where the space falls, which is the break a two-part name usually wants. Nothing is dropped, transliterated or quietly skipped, so the count of lines always matches the count of characters you typed.
What about X, Q and Z?
Q and Z have words in all four lists: quay and quayside, zephyr, quince and quail, zinnia, quiet and questions, zeal, questions and quizzes, zero and zoology. X has none, in any of them, because English has no common X word for water, nature, friendship or school. So an X line comes up blank with its X kept, and the page says so by name rather than handing you an invented word. Each list covers 25 of the 26 letters for that reason.
What do the themes and tones actually change?
The theme decides which word list each letter is drawn from: water, nature, friendship or school. The tone decides the endings the lines are built on, and calm, bright and playful are written separately rather than adjusted from one set, so a playful school line is a different sentence from a calm one, not the same sentence reworded. That gives 12 pairings, eight endings each. Switching either one rebuilds every line you have not rewritten yourself.
Can I choose a different word for one line?
Yes. Click a line and the words that list holds for its letter appear underneath it, and choosing one rewrites that line's opening while keeping the ending and its agreement, so a plural word still gets a plural verb. Everything else is ordinary typing: the line is a text field, so you can rewrite it, paste into it or empty it. New lines rolls a fresh draw for every line you have not written yourself and leaves the ones you wrote alone.
How long can the word be, and is my poem kept?
Up to 40 characters, which is 40 lines, enough for a full name or a short phrase and short enough to stay readable on one screen. Longer than that and the tool says so rather than trimming your word to fit. The word, the theme, the tone, the draw and the lines you have written are kept in this browser so the page opens on the same poem you left, and Start over at the top of the page forgets them. Copy puts the poem on your clipboard, one line per character, empty lines included, ready to paste into a card, a document or a worksheet to print.
Does it handle an accented letter in a name?
Yes. An accented Latin letter keeps its accent at the front of its line, exactly as you typed it, and the words offered under that line come from the plain letter's list, so the E words appear for an E with an acute on it. The line itself opens blank in that case rather than gluing an accent onto an English word that does not take one.

Every line begins with the letter in its position, so the initials always spell exactly what you typed. Lines are assembled from a themed corpus written for this page and each one is editable in place. A character with no Latin letter gets an empty line for you to write rather than an invented one, and nothing on this page is produced by a language model.
