What does this IP address lookup show?

For one supplied public IPv4 or IPv6 address, it reads the approximate geography from DB-IP City Lite and the AS number, AS organization and matched address range from DB-IP ASN Lite. Country, region and city may be missing or inaccurate. The AS organization describes the dataset’s routing attribution; it does not verify who owns an address or guarantee the user’s ISP or carrier.

Can it find an exact location, person or device?

No. IP geolocation is approximate and can differ materially from device location, especially on mobile, VPN, proxy or CDN networks. Lite has reduced coverage and accuracy compared with DB-IP’s commercial databases. The tool omits coordinates and maps, and cannot find someone’s name, street address, phone, email or device.

What does Use my IP do?

It sends an explicit request to our server to look up the connection address recorded by the trusted hosting edge. That address may belong to a shared gateway, VPN or proxy. The server refuses self lookup if trusted metadata is unavailable; it does not trust arbitrary forwarded headers. It does not discover a local computer, router, printer or phone address.

What does the AS number mean?

An autonomous system is a set of networks administered under a routing policy; its number identifies that system. This page matches a supplied IP against the saved DB-IP ASN table and reports its AS organization and the matched start and end addresses. It does not accept an AS number as input or show live BGP announcements, peers, route history, WHOIS ownership or reverse DNS.

Where does the data come from and how current is it?

The tool holds September 2026 DB-IP Lite City and ASN files, retrieved on 2026-09-08, under CC BY 4.0 with attribution to db-ip.com. Every result includes the month, retrieval date and snapshot age. DB-IP publishes monthly; our controller checks for refresh after the seventh when the month changes. After 60 days the result is labelled stale; after 120 days fields are explicitly historical records of that month. A failed refresh retains the dated prior snapshot. Hosting, memory and bandwidth still have costs even though the data is free.

Why are private or special addresses excluded?

Private ranges such as 10/8, 172.16/12, 192.168/16 and IPv6 unique-local ranges can be reused in separate networks, so an address alone cannot identify the network or its location. Loopback, link-local, documentation, multicast, translation, protocol and other special or unsupported ranges are also excluded from this tool’s ordinary geolocation workflow. Some special-purpose addresses are globally reachable. Exclusion is a lookup policy, not proof that an address is unroutable, unowned or safe.

What happens when an address or field is missing?

An address with no matching record receives an explicit uncovered message. No nearby range, different address, coordinates or prior visitor result is substituted. Individual absent fields say not in this snapshot. A missing or corrupt asset and unreadable reply fail explicitly. The complete selectable summary includes the same address, dates, approximate fields, omissions and attribution as the visible result.

Do you save or share the address I look up?

A supplied public address goes to our own server only after an explicit lookup request. Private, special and malformed addresses are settled in the browser. The lookup route adds no address logging or per-visitor cache and sends no input or result values to product analytics; hosting infrastructure handles requests under its own policies. The browser restores its existing draft without writing, saves deliberate valid address edits locally, and preserves saved data during invalid edits. Forget saved address explicitly clears that key. Use my IP does not automatically save the returned address.

Can I look up a website, email, phone, bulk list or historical date?

This page accepts one literal IP address. It does not resolve domains or hostnames, retrieve PTR records, search WHOIS or abuse contacts, inspect email headers, identify accounts or devices, accept phone numbers, process a batch, or select older snapshots. Those are distinct workflows. Named provider APIs, software and native system commands are not implemented here.
