Common questions

What can an IP address actually tell you?
Which network it was issued to, and where that network's operator registers it. This page shows the operator name, the AS number, the address range the operator holds, and the country, region and city recorded for that range in the DB-IP Lite database. It cannot tell you who was using the address, what they were doing, or where the device physically was. An address is a routing label for a network, not an identifier for a person.
Why is the city wrong for my own address?
Because the city on this page is where the operator registers the range, not where you are sitting. A mobile network can route a whole region through one city, a VPN answers from wherever its exit node is, and a CDN can serve you from a machine registered on another continent. DB-IP Lite is also a reduced-accuracy monthly file: it is accurate about which network owns a range and approximate about the place attached to it. That is why the page leads with the operator and the AS number, which are the reliable part.
Does this show a device's location?
No, and it is built so it cannot be read that way. There is no map and no latitude or longitude on this page, even though the dataset carries coordinates for the city it names, because a pin implies a precision that network geography does not have. What you get is the place an operator registers a range, labelled as exactly that.
What does the AS number mean?
An Autonomous System is a block of addresses run under one routing policy, and its AS number is how the rest of the internet refers to it. AS15169 is Google, AS13335 is Cloudflare. This page reads the number and the operator name from the DB-IP Lite IP-to-ASN table and shows the start and end of the range that matched, so you can see how wide a block your address sits in. It does not show BGP peers, live route announcements or who registered the domain.
Where does this data come from and how current is it?
From the DB-IP Lite IP-to-City and IP-to-ASN files for September 2026, published by db-ip.com under CC BY 4.0 and stored on this site rather than fetched per visit. Every result says which month it came from. DB-IP publishes monthly, and this snapshot is refreshed on the same schedule; once a snapshot passes 60 days the page says so beside the result, and past 120 days it stops presenting the fields as the network today and labels them as a record of that month.
Why does a private address return nothing?
Because nobody owns it. Ranges like 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12 and 192.168.0.0/16 (RFC 1918) are reused inside millions of separate networks, and reserved ranges such as 127.0.0.0/8 or 169.254.0.0/16 never appear on the public internet at all. This page recognises those in your browser, names the range and the RFC that defines it, and does not send them to the server, because no dataset could say which network a private address belongs to.
What happens if the dataset has no range for an address?
The page says so. It will not fall back to the nearest range, the containing block or a country guess, because a substituted answer that looks like a real one is worse than no answer. The same rule applies field by field: if the dataset holds an operator but no city, you get the operator and the city line reads as absent.
Do you keep the address I look up?
The lookup route does not log the address, does not store it and does not send it to analytics. Your own browser remembers the last address in the box, under one local storage key, so the field is still filled when you come back; the Start over button at the top of the page clears it.
