Words to Pages Calculator

A page count is not a fact about a word count. It is a division, and the number being divided by is an assumption about a page. Here that assumption sits in the readout beside the answer, and it is yours to change. 1,000 words at the standard 250 words a page is 4.0 pages double spaced and 2.0 single, and that 250 is worked out from the page itself: US Letter with 1 inch margins in 12 point Times New Roman leaves 23 lines of about 10.9 words each. Switch the typeface to Arial and the same page holds 220 words, so the same 1,000 words run to 4.5 pages. Set the spacing to 1.5 and it holds 335. Type a figure into the words-a-page box and it overrides the lot, which is what you want when a brief or a submission guideline states its own. The page this tool opens on, 1,850 words at 250 a page, is 7.4 pages and rounds up to 8; 2,000 words is 8.0. Paste the draft itself instead of a total and it is counted in this browser, with nothing uploaded and no account anywhere.

Single spaced, at 500 words a page, the same 1,850 words fill 3.7 pages: 3.7 fewer.

Times New Roman 12 pt, double spaced, 1 in margins, US Letter: 23 lines a page at about 10.9 words a line.

The words-a-page figure in the readout is the one being divided by, and it is yours to change: set the font, the size, the spacing, the margins and the paper and it follows them, or type a figure into the last box and it wins outright. Margins read in inches by default and understand 25mm, 2.5cm and 72pt as well. A pasted draft is counted in this browser, up to 5,000,000 characters at once, and nothing typed here is uploaded or attached to anything. Your last setting is kept in this browser so the page opens where you left it.

Accuracy. Exact division by the words-a-page figure printed beside the answer, which starts at 250 for double-spaced 12 point Times and which you can change to anything positive. Real pages depend on the font, the margins, the headings and where paragraphs break, so this is an estimate of length and never a publisher's or a marker's page count. The figure the settings give is worked out from the page you describe: the text area left inside the margins, the line height the size and spacing produce, an average English word of 5.7 characters with its space, and a line that fills about 73 percent of its width once the ragged right edge and the short last line of each paragraph are allowed for. That calibration puts the standard page, 12 point Times New Roman double spaced on US Letter with 1 in margins, at 23 lines of about 10.9 words: the conventional 250 words a page, and 500 single spaced.

Common questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?
4.0 pages double spaced and 2.0 pages single spaced, on the standard assumption of 250 words a page double or 500 single: US Letter, 1 inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman. At 1.5 spacing the same page holds 335 words and 1,000 words comes to 3.0 pages. The typeface moves it as much as the spacing does. Arial sets wider, so a page holds 220 words and 1,000 words runs to 4.5 pages. Courier New is monospaced and holds 190, which is 5.3 pages. On A4, which is taller than US Letter, the same settings hold 260 words a page and 1,000 words is 3.8 pages.
How many words fit on one page?
About 250 double spaced and 500 single spaced, and 335 at 1.5 spacing, for 12 point Times New Roman on US Letter with 1 inch margins. That figure is not a convention pulled off a shelf here: the text area inside those margins is 6.5 by 9 inches, a double-spaced 12 point line is 27.6 points tall, so 23 lines fit, and an average English word with its trailing space takes about 5.7 characters, which leaves roughly 10.9 words on a line once the ragged right edge and the short last line of each paragraph are allowed for. Change the size to 11 point and the same page holds 295 words instead.
How many pages is a 500 word essay?
2.0 pages double spaced, and exactly 1.0 page single spaced, at 250 and 500 words a page. A 2,000 word essay is 8.0 pages double spaced and 4.0 single. Because the answer is a straight division, the pattern holds: every 250 words is another double-spaced page, so 750 words is 3.0 pages, 1,500 words is 6.0 and 3,000 words is 12.0. The rounded-up figure beside the fractional one is the page the writing actually reaches, which is the number a page limit is counted against.
Does the font really change the page count?
Yes, and by more than most people expect. On the same US Letter page, double spaced at 12 point, this tool estimates 250 words a page in Times New Roman, 230 in Georgia, 220 in Arial, 200 in Verdana and 190 in Courier New, because the average character in each family is a different width. Calibri at its usual 11 point holds about 280. That spread is why the tool asks for the font rather than hiding an assumption about it, and why the figure it settles on stays visible beside the answer.
Can I set my own words a page?
Yes. The last box in the settings takes any positive figure and it overrides the font, the size, the spacing, the margins and the paper completely. If a course handbook says 300 words a page, or a publisher counts 250 a page by the old manuscript convention regardless of what the typesetting does, type that number and the answer and the rounded-up page follow it, and it joins the table of common lengths as its own column. Clear the box and the settings take over again.
Is this page count accurate enough to hand in?
No, and no calculator can be. The arithmetic here is exact, but a real page is set by things a word count cannot see: headings and subheadings, block quotes, tables and figures, a title page, a bibliography, how often paragraphs break, whether your word processor adds space between them, and even whether the last line of a paragraph leaves half a line empty. Treat the figure as an estimate of length for the settings shown. When a page limit is the thing that matters, set the piece in the software you will submit it from and read the page count there.
Is my pasted writing uploaded anywhere?
No. Switch to Pasted text and the words are counted by this page in your own browser, in a single pass over the characters, with nothing sent to a server and no account asked for. A paste of up to 5,000,000 characters is read at once, which at an average of 5.7 characters a word is around 875,000 words, and anything past that is refused with the size rather than quietly cut short. Your settings are remembered in this browser so the page opens where you left it, and the Start over button at the top of the page forgets them.
