Logic Grid Puzzles
Solve category-matching puzzles made on this page: 3 or 4 categories, such as friends, pets and ages, each with 3 or 4 values. Every clue is one of four kinds (is, is not, either/or, or an ordered comparison such as older than), and a clue set is offered only after a check of every complete assignment finds exactly one that fits and shows that no clue could be dropped. Tap a cell once for no and twice for yes: a yes puts a no on the rest of its row and column in that block, and the grid flags contradictions such as two yeses in one row. Check counts the marks that do not fit the clues, Hint points at a wrong mark or the next cell that follows and says why, and your progress stays in this browser. Any puzzle prints as a blank grid with its numbered clues, with the answer on a second page if you want it.
Setting up the grid

Each person goes with exactly one value in every other category. Tap a cell once for no, twice for yes, and a third time to clear it. A yes puts a no on the rest of its row and column in that block, and clearing the yes takes those back. On a phone, or anywhere a cell is small, the Row and Column lists under the grid pick any pair and the Yes, No and Clear buttons mark it. On a keyboard, the arrow keys move, Space or Enter cycles, X puts a no on or takes it off, O does the same for a yes, Backspace clears and Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z undoes. Press a clue to cross it off. Check counts the marks that do not fit the clues; Hint names one wrong mark, or the next cell that follows from the marks and the clues, and says why. The size and seed make the same puzzle again anywhere, and your progress stays in this browser.

How the check works
- exactly 1 of the 36 assignments fits: Cleo, fish, 10
- 6 cells turn to no: the other 3 in Ben's row and 3 in the dog column
- never offered as a puzzle; a new clue set is generated
Common questions
- How do you solve a logic grid puzzle?
- Every value goes with exactly one value in each other category. Read a clue, put a no in each cell it rules out and a yes where it confirms a pair. A yes rules out the rest of its row and column in that block, and this grid fills those nos in for you. Then link the blocks: if Ada owns the cat and the cat's owner is 8, Ada is 8. Hint shows the next step and the reason for it whenever you are stuck.
- Does every puzzle here have exactly one answer?
- Yes. Before a puzzle is offered, the tool tests every complete assignment of the values, 36 of them for 3 categories of 3 and 13,824 for 4 categories of 4, and keeps the clue set only if exactly one assignment fits. It also drops the set unless removing any single clue would let a second answer in, so every clue is needed. A clue set with two answers, or with none, is never shown.
- What kinds of clues are used?
- Four: is ("The cat's owner is 8."), is not ("Ada does not own the cat."), either/or ("The 10-year-old owns either the fish or the cat.", where the two choices are in one category, so exactly one is true) and ordered comparisons ("Dev is older than Ada."). Comparisons always use the one ordered category of the puzzle: ages, finishing places, watering days or page counts.
- How do I mark cells on a phone?
- Tap a cell once for no, twice for yes and a third time to clear it. On a narrow screen the cells shrink to fit, so under the grid there are Row and Column lists that pick any pair and full-size Yes, No and Clear buttons that mark it. On a keyboard, the arrow keys move, X puts a no on or takes it off, O does the same for a yes, and Backspace clears.
- Can I print a logic grid puzzle for a class?
- Yes. Print gives a page with the categories, a blank grid and the numbered clues, and the answer on a second page if you tick that box. The size and seed are printed on the sheet, and typing the same size and seed here makes the same puzzle again on any device.
- Are the puzzles rated easy, medium or hard?
- No. There is no difficulty rating, because none is measured. Size is the lever you control: 3 categories of 3 values has 36 possible assignments, 3 of 4 has 576, 4 of 3 has 216 and 4 of 4 has 13,824, and the number of clues depends on the seed.
- Is my progress saved?
- Your marks, crossed-off clues and hint count are kept in this browser's local storage, and up to 7 earlier puzzles you played are listed under the tool so you can resume them. Nothing is sent anywhere. Start over above the tool forgets all of it.
Every puzzle is generated here from original clues of four kinds only: is, is not, either/or, and ordered comparisons such as older than. A clue set is offered only when a check of every complete assignment finds exactly one that fits, and only when dropping any one clue would let a second answer in. A yes you mark sets the rest of its row and column in that block to no; there is no difficulty rating, because none is measured.
