Common questions

Can the same question come up twice?

Not until the pool behind your filters has run out. Every question this session has drawn is kept out of the next draw, so with a theme and a depth chosen you will see each matching question once before any of them returns. The line under the stage counts what is left, and when the pool does run dry the tool hands out the unseen questions first, reshuffles the rest behind them and says so in that line rather than repeating quietly. Changing the theme, the depth or the setting starts a fresh session, because it is a different pool.

What does the depth number mean?

It is a judgement written with the question, on a scale of 1 to 5, and it is the control that makes this page different from a single shuffled list. Depth 1 is a warm-up anybody can answer in a sentence, 2 is a small story with no preparation, 3 is worth a moment before answering, 4 shares something that matters, and 5 wants a long answer from people who already trust each other. Nothing measures a question or learns from how your group answered it: the number is the one stored with the line. Depth 5 is deliberately the smallest part of the list, because a good evening needs a handful of those and a lot of the others.

Which questions work for a group, and which for two people?

That is what the Setting control picks. Group keeps the questions everyone in a circle can take a turn at, which rules out the ones that put one person on the spot. Pair keeps the questions that give two people somewhere to go, which rules out the ones that get a single word and then a silence: the colour of your wardrobe is a fine round the table and dead one to one. Neither setting says anything about how long an answer runs, because that is what depth is for: Group at depth 5 still hands you questions that want a long answer, from everybody in turn. Either draws from all 240. The tag is written with each question, the same way the depth is.

Are these questions suitable for children, a classroom or a family table?

They are written to suit any age. Every question was written for this page with a mixed table in mind: none of them asks what anyone earns, what anything cost, who they vote for or anything about their health, none of them is the sort of question a clinician would ask wearing the clothes of a party game, and none of them pressures anyone to answer. Nobody is named and nobody is required to speak, so passing is always an option the tool leaves to the room. For a classroom or a younger group, Light and Funny at depth 1 or 2 are the shortest openers, and Growing up and Favourites work well once people have warmed up.

Can I print the questions or copy them out?

Both. Copy puts the whole set on the clipboard as plain text, with a heading that says which theme, depth and setting produced it, so it can be pasted into a message or a document. Print lays the same set out as one card each, ready to cut up and put in the middle of a table, and the browser's own print command does the same thing. Each row in the list below the stage also has its own Copy button for a single question.

Where do the questions come from, and is anything collected?

All 240 were written by hand for this tool. No conversation card deck, no other generator's list and no scraped page went into it, which is also why the tool can promise the tone it does. Everything runs in your browser: no account, nothing uploaded, and no record of what anyone said, because the answers never leave the room and the page never asks for them. The theme, depth, setting and count you chose are remembered in this browser so the next visit opens where you left it, and if storage is blocked the page still draws.
