Is this the official Boggle game?

No. It is an original game of the same kind, with no affiliation to Boggle or its makers. The letters come from this site's own letter table, printed on the page, not from the dice of any boxed set, and words are checked against the public-domain ENABLE list rather than any official word list. It is a solo game: there is no multiplayer mode and no scoreboard shared with other people.

How do I enter a word?

Three ways, all on the same grid. Drag across touching letters and let go to send the word. Tap letters one at a time and tap the last one again to send it; tapping an earlier letter of the word cuts back to it. Or type the word and press Enter. With a keyboard, the arrow keys move between letters, Enter or Space taps the focused letter, and typing a letter while the grid has focus moves you to the word field.

How are words scored?

By length: a word of 3 or 4 letters scores 1 point, 5 letters 2, 6 letters 3, 7 letters 5, and 8 letters or more 11. A Qu tile gives two letters and counts as two. A word scores once, however many times you send it and however many paths spell it. On seed 3071 at 4 x 4, POOREST scores 5 along b3 a2 b2 c2 d3 c3 d4.

Can I play the same grid as a friend?

Yes. Every grid comes from a seed, a number from 1 to 999,999, and the same seed with the same grid size always deals the same letters in every browser. New board picks a fresh seed and shows it; type a seed and choose Play seed to deal that grid again, or send the number to someone. Seed 3071 at 4 x 4 is S O V C, A O P E, I R S R, J U E T, holding 194 words of 3 letters or more worth 360 points. The same seed at another size is a different grid.

Does the timer stop if I switch tabs?

No. When a round starts, the game records the moment it ends, and the time left is always worked out from that moment, so a hidden tab, a slow device or a reload cannot add time. Leave with 1:10 left and come back 40 seconds later, and 0:30 is left. A word sent after the end time does not score. Rounds last 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes, or have no limit and end when you choose End round. The clock starts only once the word list has loaded.

Can I see the words I missed?

Yes. When the round ends, the panel beside the grid, or below it on a narrow screen, lists every word on it that you did not find, best first, with its points and its path, written as cells such as c1 b1 b2: rows are letters from the top, columns numbers from the left. Choose a word and its path lights up on the grid, numbered cell by cell. The list comes from searching the whole grid against ENABLE when the round starts, so it holds exactly the words that can be traced there at your minimum length.

Why was my word refused?

The game says which rule it broke: it has a character that is not a letter, it is shorter than the round's minimum, you already found it, it is not in ENABLE, or it cannot be traced on this grid. For a word that cannot be traced it names the reason: a letter the grid does not have, too few copies of a letter, or the point where the path runs out, such as its A at b3 not touching its P at c1. A real word that ENABLE lacks, such as most names, is refused.

Is my game saved, and is anything sent anywhere?

Your settings and your last 30 rounds, with the words you found, are kept in this browser only, so you can resume an unfinished round or review a finished one, and Start over at the top of the page forgets them. The page makes one request, to this site, for the ENABLE list, 1.7 MB, when you start or resume your first round in a visit. Every word is checked in your browser, nothing you type is uploaded, and Copy summary gives the grid size, the seed and your score, never a word.

The letter distribution

Every cell is drawn from this table, in tiles per hundred, written for this game. A grid is drawn again until between a quarter and a half of its cells are vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and no tile appears more than 2 times on a 3 x 3 or 4 x 4 grid, 3 times on a 5 x 5 or 4 times on a 6 x 6. On a 4 x 4 grid that means 4 to 8 vowels. Q only comes as Qu.
