Cube Practice Timer
Time cube solves from 2x2 to 7x7 with a hold-to-start timer that works with the space bar or a touch screen, optional 15 second inspection with the +2 and DNF rules applied for you, and a new random-move scramble for every solve. Each solve keeps the scramble it was timed on, a +2 or DNF can be set or taken off any past solve and the ao5, ao12 and mean follow at once, and a solve during which you left the tab is flagged rather than silently kept. Sessions have names, stay in this browser where it keeps storage, and download as CSV.
Preparing a scramble
No solves yet. Hold Space or touch the timer, let go to start, and your times appear here, newest first.
A typed time takes the scramble shown above, then a new one appears, the same as a timed solve. Use +2 and DNF on it afterwards if it needs them.
The keys wake up once you have clicked or tabbed into the tool, and only while the timer is on screen. Until then the space bar pages the article down, the way it does everywhere else.
How the averages count
Common questions
- How is ao5 calculated?
- Take your last five solves, drop the fastest and the slowest, and average the middle three. A +2 is added before sorting, so 10.00 with +2 counts as 12.00. A DNF counts as the slowest, so one DNF is simply the solve that gets dropped; a second DNF cannot be dropped and the ao5 becomes DNF. ao12 works the same way over twelve solves, dropping one fastest and one slowest and averaging the other ten. With times of 10, 11, 12, 13 and 100 seconds the ao5 is 12.00.
- How do I start and stop the timer?
- Click or tab into the tool once, then hold the space bar until the time turns from red to teal, which takes 0.3 seconds, and let go to start. Pressing any key stops it (a modifier such as Shift or Cmd on its own does not), and Escape abandons the attempt without recording anything. On a phone or tablet, touch and hold the timer area the same way, and tap it to stop. A hold shorter than 0.3 seconds does not start the clock, so a brushed key is not a solve.
- What is the 15 second inspection rule?
- With Inspection set to 15 s, a tap on the space bar or the timer starts a 15 second countdown for looking over the cube. Hold and let go before it runs out and the solve is clean; start after 15 seconds and the solve gets +2; start after 17 seconds and it is a DNF. The timer applies the penalty itself when the solve begins, and you can still change it afterwards.
- Are these official WCA scrambles?
- No. They are random move sequences: 11 moves on R, U and F for the 2x2, 20 moves for the 3x3, and 40, 60, 80 and 100 moves for the 4x4 to 7x7, with wide turns on the bigger cubes. No layer is turned twice within a run of moves on one axis, so you never get R R or R L R. Official competitions take their scrambles from the WCA's own scrambling program, which for the smaller cubes picks a position of the cube uniformly at random, so treat these as practice scrambles.
- Can I fix a time or add one from another timer?
- Yes. Choose any solve in the history list and the +2, DNF and Delete buttons apply to it; press a lit penalty button again to take the penalty off, and Undo delete puts a deleted solve back where it was. To add a time from a hardware timer or another app, type it into Add a time by hand as 12.34, 1:05.20 or 1:02:03.45. It takes the scramble on screen and a new one appears, as with a timed solve.
- What does "flagged: tab hidden mid-solve" mean?
- The browser tab was hidden at some point during inspection or the solve, for example because you switched apps. The time is measured from two clock readings rather than counted, so a hidden tab does not lose ticks, but the timer cannot tell whether you were solving the whole time, so it marks the solve. It still counts in your averages; mark it DNF or delete it if it should not.
- Where are my times saved, and can I export them?
- In this browser's local storage, on this device only, where this browser keeps storage: nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Each session has its own name and cube size, and changing the cube size on a session that already has solves opens a new session, so a 3x3 ao5 never mixes in a 4x4 time. The .csv button downloads the session with the time, penalty, result, ao5, ao12, cube, scramble and recording time of every solve.
Times come from your browser's clock and are kept to the hundredth of a second; the delay between your key or touch and the page is not measured, and a solve during which the tab was hidden is flagged. Scrambles are random move sequences, not official random-state competition scrambles, and this is a practice timer with no WCA certification.
