Is one dog year really seven human years?

No. It is folklore, and it is wrong at both ends. A dog reaches something like human adolescence within its first year, so a one-year-old is closer to fifteen than to seven. And ageing does not stay constant: after about two, a giant breed adds roughly seven and a half human years annually while a small breed adds about four.

Why does breed size change the answer?

Large dogs mature at a similar rate early on but age much faster afterwards, and nobody is entirely sure why. Faster growth and higher rates of age-related disease are both implicated. The practical effect is stark: a Great Dane is considered senior at about five, a small terrier not until eight.

What is the epigenetic clock figure?

A 2020 study at UC San Diego compared chemical methylation marks on the DNA of Labrador retrievers and humans, and produced the formula 16 × ln(age) + 31. It fits adult dogs reasonably and puppies poorly. It is shown here beside the veterinary chart because presenting one number as settled fact would overstate what is known.

When is a dog considered senior?

It depends on size: roughly five for giant breeds, six for large, seven for medium and eight for small. Most vets suggest moving to twice-yearly check-ups from that point, since conditions that develop slowly in humans can progress within months in a dog.

How do I work out the age of a rescue dog?

A vet can estimate it from teeth (wear and tartar are the usual guide) plus eye clarity, coat condition and muscle tone. Estimates are usually given as a range rather than a number, and the range widens for older dogs. Enter the middle of whatever range you were given.

Which breeds live longest?

Smaller ones, consistently. Toy and small breeds often reach 14 to 16 years, medium dogs 11 to 13, and giant breeds frequently 7 to 10. It is one of the few places in biology where the usual rule that larger animals live longer runs backwards within a single species.
