Movie Title Generator

Pick a genre, type a setting or a theme if you have one, and get up to 40 film titles assembled from word pools and sentence grammars written for that genre alone. There are 10 genres here: comedy, mystery, horror, thriller, romance, science fiction, fantasy, action, drama and western. Each owns 72 of the 720 authored entries in the tool, being 12 adjectives, 12 nouns, 10 plural nouns, 10 character words, 8 verbs, 10 settings and 10 themes, and no entry sits in two genres anywhere, so a comedy list and a mystery list are built from different words rather than one word list under two headings. The 74 sentence grammars are genre specific in the same way: mystery opens on The Case of the Borrowed Alibis at seed 161, where comedy has Nine Ways to Lose a Parade second in the list at seed 18, and between them the grammars can be filled 11,904 different ways. Every title carries the shape it was built from beside it. Leave Setting and Theme blank and each title takes them from the lists written for the genre; fill either one in and it goes into every title whose sentence has that slot. Every list carries a seed, so mystery with the setting small town and seed 6641 opens on Notes on an Old Debt, on this machine and on any other. Nothing you type leaves your browser, no account is asked for, and 71 very well known film titles are blocked from the output, which is the only place a real film is named in this tool: the page cannot tell you whether a title you like is already taken.

12 Mystery titles, seed 2026

Leave Setting and Theme blank and each title takes them from the lists written for the genre. Fill either one in and it goes into every title whose sentence has that slot, spelled the way you typed it: type the article if you want one, since Chicago and the space station read differently in a title. Generate picks a fresh seed; type a seed back in and the same genre, setting, theme and seed return the same titles in the same order, on any machine. Drawn takes the first few of that one list rather than starting again.

This genre can fill its 9 sentence grammars 730 different ways. No film catalogue is consulted: 71 very well known titles are blocked from the draw, and any other match with a real film is a coincidence.

Accuracy. Titles are assembled from word pools and sentence grammars written for this page, a separate set per genre, which is why comedy and mystery do not produce each other's phrasing. The same genre, setting and seed always give the same list. Nothing is drawn from a film catalogue, and a title that happens to match a real one is a coincidence: check it before you use it anywhere.

Common questions

Can I use a title this generator gives me?
We place no restriction on the titles the tool produces: the words were written for this tool, the assembly is a rule in the page, and neither is licensed to you or withheld from you. What the tool cannot tell you is whether a particular title is already a film, a script in a drawer or a trademark, because that is a question about the world rather than about this generator. A block list of 71 very well known titles is checked on every draw, so the grammar cannot hand you Maximum Overdrive by accident, but 71 titles is not the catalogue: a title you plan to put on a poster is worth a search before you commit to it.
How do I get the same list of titles back later?
Every list has a seed, shown under the big title and in the Seed field. Press Generate and the tool picks a fresh four-digit seed for you; type a seed back in and the same genre, setting and theme return the same titles in the same order, on this machine and on any other. The seed is read as text, so 0012 and 12 are two different seeds. Only the surrounding spaces and the letter case are ignored, so a seed can be read out loud to someone else. A seed can be any word or number up to 120 characters, and a longer one is refused with a message rather than quietly cut.
What makes the 10 genres different from each other?
Each genre carries its own vocabulary and its own sentences. The vocabulary is 72 entries: 12 adjectives, 12 nouns, 10 plural nouns, 10 character words such as Coroner or Mall Santa, 8 verbs, 10 settings and 10 themes. No entry appears in two genres anywhere in the tool and no sentence shape does either, and the test suite checks both on every run. That is why mystery reaches for The Quiet Inventory or What the Harbormaster Knew while comedy reaches for Parking Tickets Anonymous, and why the two could not be swapped without a reader noticing.
How do the Setting and Theme fields work?
They are slots in the sentences, not decoration. Leave them blank and each title takes a setting and a theme from the 10 of each written for the genre. Fill either one in and it goes into every title whose sentence has that slot, spelled the way you typed it, so type the article if you want one: Chicago and the space station read differently inside a title. A setting or theme can be up to 40 characters, and a longer one is refused with a message rather than cut. Letters, digits, spaces and a short list of marks survive, and anything else is removed before the text reaches a title, a copied list or a downloaded file, with a line under the controls telling you when that happened.
How many titles can I draw at once?
From 1 to 40 titles in a single draw, set in the Drawn field. Forty is the point where a list stops being something a person reads, so a larger number is refused with a message instead of being trimmed to forty behind your back, and so is a number that is not whole, is empty or is not a number at all. Every genre can fill all 40 whether or not you have typed a setting and a theme. The Drawn field takes the first few titles of one list rather than redrawing it, so raising it adds to the end of what you already had.
What is the small line beside each title?
It names the grammar the title was built from, such as the plus adjective plus noun, or number plus ways to plus verb plus a plus noun. There are 74 shapes across the ten genres, between seven and nine per genre, and a draw works through a genre's shapes in a shuffled order rather than picking one at random each time, so a short list shows you the genre's different sentences instead of the same one three times. The line is there so the method is visible next to the result: a title is an arrangement of authored words, not a guess at something that already exists.
Can I keep the ones I like, or save the list?
The star beside a title keeps it, and the kept titles collect under the list with a Copy kept button. They are remembered in this browser along with the genre, setting, theme, draw size and seed, so the tool opens where you left it, and the Start over button at the top of the page forgets all of it. Copy puts the visible list on the clipboard one title per line, and Download saves it as a text file, a CSV with the genre and shape in their own columns, or a Markdown list. If the browser refuses the clipboard, the page says so and tells you to select the text and press Ctrl+C, or Cmd+C on a Mac.
Where do the words come from, and is a film catalogue involved?
The words were written for this tool in September 2026 and live in its own source file, genre by genre. They are not scraped from other title generators, and no list of existing films is used to build anything: the only place a real film is named is the block list of 71 well known titles the draw throws away. Because every word ships with the page, the tool needs no network call, works offline and sends nothing you type anywhere.
