Multiplication Table

The full multiplication table up to 12, or any size from 1 to 30, with the row and column lit as you move so a fact is never lost in the grid. Rest on a cell and the Highlight readout writes out the fact, 8 × 7 = 56, while the line under the grid adds the working; move over any row and that times table is written out underneath, twelve facts with a trick for each. Print gives the grid alone on a clean sheet, Copy as text puts it on the clipboard with tabs between the cells so it pastes straight into a spreadsheet, and the eleven times tables from 2 to 12 each have their own page with the method that makes them easy.

Any whole number from 1 to 30 in the size box redraws the grid. Print gives the grid alone, and Copy as text puts it on the clipboard with tabs between the cells, so it pastes into a spreadsheet as cells.

Common questions

How does the highlight work?
Move the pointer over any cell and its whole row and column light up, with the cell itself in the brightest shade, so you can read across and down without losing your place. The Highlight readout writes the fact out, for example 8 × 7 = 56, and the footer under the grid adds the working, such as double 7 three times: 14, 28, then 56. Without a mouse, click or tab to the grid and use the arrow keys: Home and End jump to the start and end of a row. Escape clears the highlight.
Can I print the multiplication table?
Yes. Press Print, or use your browser's own print command, and only the table prints: the headings, buttons and this text are left off, the grid gets thin borders and black numbers, and a table bigger than 15 by 15 turns the page landscape so the columns stay readable. Choose PDF as the printer to save it as a file. On a times-table page, that table's twelve facts print under the grid as well.
What are the tricks for each times table?
Move over any row from 2 to 12 and the trick is written above its facts. To multiply by 2, double the number. By 4, double twice; by 8, double three times. By 5, take ten times the number and halve it. By 9, take ten times the number and subtract the number: the digits of every answer up to 9 × 10 add up to nine. By 10, add a zero. By 11, write the digit twice up to 99, then ten times plus the number. By 12, ten times the number plus two times the number. The 3, 6 and 7 tables are learnt by skip-counting, and each fact in those rows shows the previous answer plus the table number.
Can I make the table bigger than 12?
Yes. The buttons give 10, 12, 15 and 20, and the size box takes any whole number from 1 to 30, so the largest grid is 30 by 30 with 900 products, up to 30 × 30 = 900. On a narrow screen a large grid scrolls sideways inside the dark panel rather than squashing the numbers. The size you choose is remembered on this device, so the grid opens the same way next time.
How do I get the table into a spreadsheet or a document?
Press Copy as text. The grid goes onto the clipboard with a tab between each cell and a new line after each row, with × in the corner and the headers 1 to the size along the top and down the side. Paste into Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and every number lands in its own cell; paste into a plain text editor and the columns line up with tabs.
Why does a standard multiplication table stop at 12?
Habit, mostly. Twelve was the practical limit when there were twelve pennies to a shilling and twelve inches to a foot, and schools kept it because the 11 and 12 tables are the last ones with a neat trick. Nothing in the arithmetic stops at 12, which is why the grid here goes to 30.
