The tile and the joint
The face size is the tile itself, without the joint. The grout gap is the spacer you are using: 3 mm is a common floor joint, and a 1/8 inch spacer is 3.175 mm.
Waste and boxes
The waste allowance is yours: the field opens at 10 percent, and whatever you type is what gets added. The tiles it adds are counted separately on the readout above, so you can always see the two numbers apart.
Supplied tile installation costs
Combine the current tile boxes with your quoted installation labour, removal and other charges. Area rates use the net tiled area before waste. For mosaic tile installation costs, enter the measured area and supplied installation rate; the rate works without tile dimensions or boxes. Mosaic placement and cuts are not calculated. Blank charges are omitted.
Supplied grout, mortar and adhesive coverage
Enter each consumable's effective coverage per container for your actual tile size, joint, tile depth and application. This section uses the net area before tile waste. It does not derive coverage from the grout gap or select a product, thickness or mixing ratio. Add separate rows for grout and adhesive.
Amounts use your quote's currency. Each amount and the unrounded subtotal are rounded half up to two decimal places separately, so displayed rows can differ from the subtotal by a cent. Omitted charges, delivery and tax are excluded. This section supplies no market prices or work method. These extra rates and consumable inputs are not saved.

Common questions
- How do I calculate tile square footage or square metres?
- Add width times height for each surface, then subtract the same calculation for each opening. The room and tile have separate unit controls for feet, inches, metres, centimetres and millimetres. A 10 by 10 ft floor with 1 ft tiles, no joint and no waste needs 100 tiles. Set 10 percent waste to add 10 tiles, giving 110 before rounding to boxes.
- Can I count bathroom, shower wall and backsplash tiles?
- Yes. Add each rectangular wall, floor or backsplash separately, including shower walls and a tub surround. Subtract doors, windows or a shower tray as openings. Use the actual tile size, whether ceramic, porcelain, vinyl, carpet, peel-and-stick or subway tile. The calculation counts rectangular tile faces; it does not choose a product, waterproofing, substrate or adhesive.
- Does the grout gap change the tile count?
- The gap is added once to each tile dimension in a continuous field. A 100 mm square tile with a 4 mm joint occupies 104 by 104 mm in this model, so one square metre needs 93 tiles before waste. Grout volume is not inferred from that gap. The separate Supplied grout, mortar and adhesive coverage section counts containers only from effective coverage supplied for your actual product, tile size, depth and joint.
- Can I estimate tile installation, labour and removal costs?
- Use Supplied tile installation costs for labour and removal rates per square foot or square metre. Those rates multiply the current measured net area before waste and work without tile dimensions or boxes, including supplied mosaic installation quotes. Enter Price per box to include material from valid current box counts; unavailable material is explicitly omitted. Other quoted charges are added as a total. The subtotal includes only entered charges and supplies no market prices or installation method.
- Can I use 12 by 12, 12 by 24 or another tile size?
- Enter the face width and height and choose the tile unit. For 12 by 24 inch tile, set inches and type 12 and 24. Tiles per box and Price per box come from your supplier. The count rounds up bare tiles, then waste tiles, then boxes, so a requirement of 101 tiles at 10 per box needs 11 boxes.
- Does it calculate a herringbone pattern or tile layout?
- The tool divides net area by the tile face plus its joint and rounds up. It cannot locate cuts or calculate a herringbone, diagonal, Versailles or mixed-size pattern. The waste percentage is your allowance. Hexagonal, roof and mosaic layouts need their own shape or effective-coverage calculation. A supplied mosaic installation area rate can be priced independently; it does not establish mosaic placement or cuts.
- How do I count installation consumable containers?
- Enter a separate consumable row for each product and its effective area covered per container, in square feet or square metres. That coverage must match your tile size, joint, tile depth and application. The calculator divides the current net area before tile waste by each supplied coverage and rounds up whole containers. Optional prices add those consumables to the entered-cost subtotal. It does not choose a product, trowel, thickness or mixing ratio.
- Can I calculate supplied tile and grout cleaning costs?
- Select Cleaning in Tile quote job. Measure the surfaces to clean in Areas to tile above, subtract openings, and enter your supplied cleaning rate per square foot or square metre. The separate cleaning subtotal multiplies that net area by your rate and adds optional other charges. It needs no tile dimensions, boxes, material prices or consumable coverage. No cleaning method is selected. Extra quote inputs are not saved.
Exact arithmetic on the dimensions you enter: area, the tile count with the grout joint included, and boxes rounded up. It cannot know your layout pattern or the offcuts a particular room forces, so the waste percentage is an allowance you set, and the box count is the number to buy from.
