Common questions

What is an incorrect quotes generator, and how is this one different?
The format started as a fandom joke: take a funny exchange, swap in the names of characters from something you like, and post it as a quote they never said. The usual generator does that with lines copied from films, television and memes, which is where the trouble starts, because the finished card looks exactly like a real quotation and travels without its context. This one writes the exchange instead of borrowing it. All 160 templates were authored for this page, so the only thing that arrives from elsewhere is the names you type. The exchanges are labelled as fiction in every copy and on the printed page, which costs nothing and settles the question before anyone has to ask it.
Are these real quotes from a film, a show or a person?
No. Every line was written for this tool, and the check lives in the code that holds the corpus rather than in a promise: a line matching any of the usual borrowed quotes or franchise names is reported as a fault, and the tests that gate every deployment read that report. The templates are ordinary human situations, a parking space, a group chat, a last box on moving day, written so that any names fit them. The lines also avoid he and she entirely and refer to each other by name or as they, because the characters are yours and the tool has no idea who they are. If you want an exchange attributed to somebody, this is the wrong page: the point here is a scene nobody said.
How do I get the same exchange back tomorrow?
Three facts reproduce it exactly: the names, the template and the seed, and the line under the box prints all three. Type the same seed with the same names and the same exchange comes back, because the seed, the tone and the character count choose the template rather than any randomness at the moment you press a button. Pin the template by name from the Template list and the tone no longer matters: that template, those names and that seed always produce the same lines. Changing a name never changes which template comes up, so you can swap a cast into a scene you already liked. Shuffle draws a new seed anywhere from 0 to 999999 and returns the Template list to Random.
Can I edit the lines before I copy them?
Yes. The box on the stage is a text editor, not a picture of one, so you can rewrite a line, add a turn or cut one, and Copy, Copy HTML and Print all take what you edited rather than what was generated. Copy puts plain text on the clipboard for a post or a message; Copy HTML puts paragraphs with the speaker names in bold for a document or a page, with every name and every character you typed escaped so nothing you write can act as markup. Both add one line naming the template and the seed and saying the exchange is fiction and not a quotation of anyone. Generating a new exchange moves the old one, with your edits, into the list underneath, where it keeps its own Copy button.
How many characters can speak, and what if a template needs more names than I gave?
Two to six, and there are at least three exchanges for every tone at every one of those counts: twelve for two characters in each tone, eight for three, six for four and three each for five and six. A name can be up to 24 characters long, and a longer one is refused with a message rather than quietly shortened. When you pick Random the tool only draws a template written for the number of characters you set, so everybody gets a line. Pin a template that wants more roles than you have names and the names are reused in order, and the tool says which name is playing more than one part; pin one that wants fewer and it names the character with no line in that scene.
Is anything uploaded, and does this need an account?
No account, no sign-up, no upload. The templates ship with the page and the whole thing runs in this tab, so the names you type never leave the browser and are never sent anywhere for analytics. Your names, tone, template, character count and seed are remembered in this browser so the page opens where you left it, and the Start over button at the top of the page forgets them. Blocked or full storage changes nothing except that: the generator still writes, copies and prints. Printing uses your own browser dialog and lays the exchange out as plain paper with the names, the template, the seed and the fiction line.
