Speech Bubble PNG

Type a line, pick a shape and a tail, and download a speech bubble as a PNG with everything outside it transparent. There is nothing to upload first: the bubble is the product here, not a decoration you add to a picture you had to hand over. Four shapes (Round, Square, Thought and Burst), a tail that points left, right or nowhere, and three line widths up to 30 characters, with the bubble growing to fit however many lines you type, up to 600 characters in all. The canvas on the page is the file: it is drawn at the pixel size printed beside it, at 1x or at 2x for a crisp export, and the download is that same canvas handed to your browser. The checkerboard is the transparency. Those squares are the page showing through, not part of the picture: the PNG carries an alpha channel, so the bubble drops onto a slide, a page or a photograph with no white box around it. What the canvas shows is what the PNG contains, at the pixel size printed under it, transparent everywhere outside the bubble unless you have put a picture there. It draws a speech bubble and nothing else: it is not a screenshot of any app, and it knows nothing about a picture you add behind it.

Common questions

How do I get a transparent background?
You already have one. There is no background to switch off: the canvas starts empty and only the bubble is drawn on it, so the PNG carries an alpha channel and everything outside the outline is fully transparent. The grey and dark squares behind the bubble on this page are the checkerboard that stands for transparency, the way an image editor draws it; they are not in the file. What is opaque is the bubble itself, which is white with a dark outline and dark text, and a picture if you added one behind it. Drop the download onto a slide, a document or a photograph and there is no white box around it.
What size does the PNG come out?
Whatever size is printed beside the canvas, in whole pixels, because that is the size the canvas is set to and the download is that canvas. The width comes from the longest line and the height from the number of lines, so a one line bubble is short and wide and every line you add makes it taller. The Size control offers 1x and 2x: 2x is exactly twice the width and twice the height, the same drawing at twice the resolution, which is the one to pick for a slide or a print. Line width sets where the words wrap, at 14, 20 or 30 characters, and a bubble holds 600 characters in total. A line of unusually wide letters is set slightly smaller rather than allowed to run past the outline.
How do I put the bubble over a photo?
Two ways, and both work. Add a picture on this page and the canvas becomes that picture's own pixel size, with the bubble drawn over it near the top and scaled to about three quarters of its width, or smaller when the bubble is a tall one; the download is then one PNG with both in it, and the Size control steps aside because the picture decides the dimensions. Or leave the picture out, download the transparent bubble on its own, and place it over the photo in whatever you are already using: a slide, a document, a video editor or an image editor. The transparent PNG is the more flexible of the two, because you can move it afterwards.
Is the picture I add uploaded anywhere?
No. The file you choose is opened by your browser from your own disk, drawn onto the canvas in this tab and then forgotten; it is never sent to a server, and there is no server here that could receive it. It is not saved in the browser either: the tool remembers your words, the shape, the tail, the line width and the size so they are still here when you come back, and it never keeps a copy of a picture. Start over clears what it remembers.
What are the four shapes for?
Round is the ordinary speech bubble, with soft corners. Square has sharp corners and suits a caption or a panel. Thought is a cloud, and its tail is two smaller bubbles trailing off the corner rather than a point. Burst is a spiked star for a shout, and it is drawn larger around the same words because its points cut inward. The tail on all four can point down and to the left, down and to the right, or be left off entirely; the room the tail needs is reserved either way, so switching it does not change the size of the file.
Why will it not take my long word?
Because a single word that is longer than the line would have to be broken in the middle, and a bubble with a word snapped in half is worse than an error. The tool names the word, says how long it is and how long a line is, and gives you the two ways out: shorten the word, or pick a wider line at 20 or 30 characters. Ordinary text never hits this. You can also press return in the text box to break a line exactly where you want it, and a blank line is kept as a gap.
