Chord Transposer

Paste a chord sheet, pick a shift in semitones or the root you want the first chord to land on, and read the whole sheet back in the new key. Chord lines move, lyrics and section labels come through exactly as they were typed, and each chord is written back in the column it started in, unless a longer symbol needs the room, so it still sits over the syllable it belonged to. Sharps or flats is your choice rather than a guess at the key, a slash bass moves with its chord, and a symbol on a chord line that the page cannot read, such as German H, is listed and left exactly as it was.

How a line is read. A line counts as chords when its chord symbols are not outnumbered by its words, so G D/F# Em and | G | D | C | move while a lyric line does not. Chords written inside square brackets move wherever they appear, and a bracket holding anything else, such as [Chorus], is a label and is left alone. Bar lines, repeat marks and N.C. are carried across as they are.

Up to 200,000 characters in one pass, transposed here in your browser with nothing uploaded and no account. The shift, the spelling and the sheet are kept in this browser alone, sheets up to 40,000 characters, and the Start over button above the tool forgets them.

Accuracy. Exact pitch-class arithmetic on the chord symbols it recognises. Section labels and lyrics are passed through untouched, and chord lines keep their columns unless a longer symbol needs the room. The sharp or flat spelling is the one you choose rather than a guess at the key.

Common questions

Does it keep the chords lined up over the lyrics?
Yes. Each chord is written back at the column it started in, so a sheet with chords above the words comes back with them still above the same words. The one case that moves is a symbol that grew, such as Em becoming F#m with only one space after it: then it takes a single space and the page tells you how many chords were nudged.
Can I transpose to a key instead of counting semitones?
Yes. The To control lists the twelve roots, and picking one sets the shift that puts the first chord of your sheet on that root. From and To show the first chord and what it became, which is a fact about the sheet rather than a key analysis: this page reads chord symbols, not key signatures.
What happens to section labels, lyrics and notes to the band?
They are copied across untouched. A line counts as chords only when its chord symbols are not outnumbered by its words, so [Chorus], a lyric line and a line like 'Intro: play it twice' are left alone. Chords written inside square brackets in a ChordPro sheet do move, because the bracket holds a chord, while a bracket holding a word does not.
Will I get sharps or flats in the result?
Whichever you pick. The Spelling control writes every result with sharps or with flats, so the same shift gives F#m or Gbm depending on your choice. At a shift of zero it simply re-spells the sheet, which is a quick way to turn a flat chart into a sharp one without changing a note.
Does it handle slash chords like D/F#?
Yes. The bass note moves with the chord, so D/F# up two semitones is E/G#. A figure after the slash is not a bass note, so C6/9 keeps its figure and only the root moves, giving D6/9 at the same shift.
Why was one of my chords left unchanged?
Because it is not a symbol this page reads. German H, a lower-case g for G minor and solfege names such as Do and Re are the usual reasons. One sitting on a line the page reads as chords is listed under the stage as left exactly as it was, rather than being guessed at or dropped. A sheet written entirely that way recognises nothing, says so, and comes back untouched. Bar lines, repeat marks and N.C. are carried across as they are and are not reported.
Is my sheet uploaded anywhere?
No. The transposing happens in this browser and the sheet is never sent anywhere. The shift, the spelling and sheets up to 40,000 characters are kept on this device so they are still there next visit, and the Start over button above the tool forgets them.
