Research

Searches for online tools follow the school year. In Australia, it runs six months the other way.

Eight years of monthly searches for 2,387 tools, the same tools in five countries. The US, Britain and Canada go quiet in the summer and come back in the fall. Australia goes quiet at Christmas and comes back in February. The tools a class sets swing hardest of all.

The average year (2019 and 2022 to 2025) of 341 math, science and citation tools, the same tools in both countries. Distance from the center is a month's searches against an ordinary month.

Most searches for a small online tool are not seasonal in any way you would notice one at a time. A unit converter gets used in March and in October. But add up thousands of them, the same 2,387 tools in five countries, and a shape comes out of the noise. In the United States it is the school year: tool searches are 19% below an ordinary month in July and 17% above it in October.

Australia's school year starts at the end of January and ends in December, after a summer holiday that falls over Christmas. Its tool searches follow that calendar, not the northern one. They bottom out in January, climb to their high in March, and dip again in the April and July school holidays.

The United Kingdom runs a month behind the US, and so does its school year: English schools break up in late July and go back in September, where most American schools close in late May or June. Line the two years up with the UK moved back one month and the correlation between them rises from 0.65 to 0.79. Canada needs no moving at all (0.86).

India is the exception. Its searches here are English-language searches, and they barely move through the year: the busiest month is 1.07× an ordinary one, the quietest 0.93×. Whatever drives these searches in India, it is not a school calendar anyone can see in the data.

The swing comes from the classroom

Split the tools in two. On one side, the 341 that a class sets: equation and calculus solvers, geometry and chemistry calculators, citation generators, worksheets, grade calculators. On the other, everything else. In the US the school tools swing 2.9 times from their quietest month to their busiest. Everything else swings 1.35 times. Australia's school tools swing 3.3 times, Canada's 3.4. India's swing 1.17 times, about the same as everything else there.

The pattern holds year after year. From 2019 to 2025, no July came within half of an ordinary month: the busiest of them was 0.49×. September was the busiest month of the year in 6 of those 7 years; the exception was 2021, when remote school lifted the spring instead.

When schools closed, the rhythm broke

If school sets the rhythm, closing the schools should break it, and it did. The charts below take the school tools' share of all tool searches each month and set it against the same month of 2019, which takes out both the season and the growth that every search shared. A value of 2 means school tools took twice their 2019 share of searches that month.

England closed its schools to most pupils from 5 January to 8 March 2021, and in January 2021 school tools took 1.6× their 2019 share of British tool searches. In India the share reached 2.24× in April 2020 and stayed high into 2022. In the US it sat between 1.14× and 1.31× through the 2020 to 2021 school year, then fell back below 1 once classrooms reopened.

A year of small problems

Some searches come back in the same month every year. The chart below keeps one for each month where one qualifies: the most-searched tool whose peak lands in the same month in at least six of the seven years from 2019 to 2025. No tool in the set peaks that reliably in February, July or August.

The searches that come back in the same month every year

Each ridge is one search's average year, scaled to its own peak. The figure is how many times its usual month the peak is.

How this was measured

The data. Monthly Google search volumes from January 2019 to July 2026, as Google Ads reports them, bought from DataForSEO in September 2026. The pool is searches that name a small online tool: a converter, a calculator, a timer, a generator. The matched set is the 2,387 of them with a complete history in all five countries (the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and India, all English-language Google). The US has 7,689 with a complete history.

The average year. For each tool and each full year (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025; 2020 and 2021 are left out because schools were shut for much of them), each month's searches are divided by that year's average month, then added up across tools, so a big search counts for more than a small one. The 95% bands come from 1,000 bootstrap resamples of the tools.

Out of step. Two countries' average years are correlated with one of them moved on by 0 to 11 months; the shift with the highest correlation is the one reported.

School tools. Searches whose words name math or science solvers, citations, worksheets, grades or GPAs. The word list is in the data file.

The searches that come back. Searches averaging at least 3,000 a month that peak in the same month in at least six of the seven years 2019 to 2025, at least 2.5 times their median month. One per month: the one with the largest peak.

Limits

  • Google Ads volumes are estimates, rounded into bands, and Google merges close variants of a search into one number. Adding up thousands of searches smooths the rounding; it does not remove it.
  • The pool is searches that name a tool job, collected in September 2026. It is not a random sample of everything people search for.
  • Only English-language searches. For India that is a slice of the country's searching, not all of it.
  • Monthly figures cannot see a week. A half-term or a spring break shows only when it fills most of a month.
