AVIF to PNG

Your browser already has an AVIF decoder, so this converter does the whole job in the tab you have open: up to twenty files at once, nothing uploaded, no account and no queue, where a converter that runs on a server makes you wait for the upload and hands back a link. It also says the thing those converters leave out. PNG is lossless, so the file it writes is usually several times the size of the AVIF it came from, and that is the format working as intended rather than a fault: every row shows the before size beside the after size, and the line under the stage names the ratio. JPEG is one press away when you want the smaller file, and because JPEG has no transparency the background colour sits beside the format, set to white until you change it, so clear pixels are never quietly filled with black. Common questions

Why is the PNG bigger than the AVIF it came from?
Because PNG is lossless and AVIF is not. AVIF throws away detail your eye is unlikely to miss and stores what is left with a modern codec, which is how a photograph fits into a couple of hundred kilobytes. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as the decoder produced it, so the same photograph comes back several times larger: two or three times is ordinary, and a detailed photograph can come back ten times larger. The page shows the before size and the after size on every row and names the ratio in the line under the stage, so you see what happened rather than guessing. If you want a smaller file, choose JPEG instead, or convert at 50% or 25% scale, both of which cut the pixel count before anything is written.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPEG?
JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparency cannot be stored in it at all. Rather than filling the clear pixels with black without telling you, the tool makes the background colour part of the conversion: choosing JPEG puts a colour well in the readout, the colour it holds is painted first and the picture is drawn over it. PNG keeps transparency by default, and if you want a flat PNG the Transparency control has a Flatten setting that uses the same colour well. The pane heading always says which of the two is in force, so a logo never comes out with a surprise background.
What happens to an animated AVIF?
It converts its first frame only, and the page says so before you convert rather than after. An AVIF can hold an image sequence, but a canvas draws one frame, and neither PNG nor JPEG carries an animation, so an honest conversion here is a single still picture. If you need the animation to survive, this is not the conversion to make: keep the AVIF, or use a format that animates.
How many files can I convert at once, and how large can they be?
20 files in one batch, and up to 30 megapixels in any one picture, which is about 6000 by 5000 pixels. Neither is an upload limit, because there is no upload: the batch ceiling keeps a phone from being asked to hold twenty decoded pictures at once, and the megapixel ceiling sits near the point where browser canvases stop returning a drawable surface and start handing back blank files. There is no limit on a file's size in bytes. When you go past either ceiling the message names the number you reached, 21 files or the exact pixel count, so you know what to remove.
Are my files uploaded to convert them?
No. The file is read by the browser's own AVIF decoder, drawn onto a canvas in this tab and written back out here, and the zip is built in the tab too. No request is made: no image byte goes to a server, to analytics or to error reporting, and nothing about a picture is written to your browser's storage. The tool remembers five settings between visits, the format, the scale, the transparency choice, the background colour and the JPEG quality, and that is all it remembers.
What if my browser cannot open AVIF at all?
The page checks on load by decoding a two pixel AVIF that is built into the page, and if that fails it says so and shows no upload zone, because a converter that cannot decode the input would only hand back broken files. AVIF decoding arrived in Chrome 85, Firefox 93 and Safari 16, so updating the browser, or opening the page in one of those, is what makes the conversion possible. The work still happens on your own machine either way.
Can I convert AVIF to JPG here instead of PNG?
Yes. Set Format to JPEG and the readout gains a quality field, from 1 to 100, and the background colour the clear pixels are filled with. The converted files are named with a .jpg extension and written as JPEG data, so the name and the contents always agree, and the same zip download covers the batch. JPEG is the right choice when you want a file near the size of the AVIF you started with, and PNG is the right choice when every pixel has to survive.
