- What does a gematria calculator compute?
- It adds up a table. A cipher assigns every letter of a script a number, and the total is the sum of those numbers for the letters you typed. This page prints each letter's value, each word's subtotal and the grand total, together with the whole table it used, so the arithmetic can be repeated by hand in a minute.
- Which ciphers does this cover?
- Six. English ordinal (a = 1 to z = 26), English reverse (a = 26 to z = 1), English reduction (the digital root of the ordinal, so every letter lands between 1 and 9), Hebrew standard (alef 1 to tav 400, with the five sofit letters at the values of the letters they close), Hebrew final letters (the same series with those sofit letters continued at 500 to 900), and Greek isopsephy (alpha 1 to omega 800, keeping stigma at 6, qoppa at 90 and sampi at 900).
- Does this page say anything about the number it returns?
- No. It reports the letter values, the word subtotals and the total for the cipher you picked, and there it stops. There is no reading attached to a sum here, no claim about a person, a date or an event, and nothing that turns a number into a message. The arithmetic is the whole product.
- Do Hebrew vowel points change the total?
- No. Points and cantillation marks (U+0591 to U+05C7) sit on top of a base letter and carry no value of their own, so they come off before lookup and are counted separately. A pointed spelling and an unpointed spelling of the same word give the same total, and the page says how many marks it took off.
- Why do the five final letters have two values?
- Because both series are in use. In Hebrew standard the sofit forms of kaf, mem, nun, pe and tsadi carry the values of the letters they close: 20, 40, 50, 80 and 90. In the Hebrew final letters cipher they continue through the hundreds at 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900. Shalom totals 376 under the first and 936 under the second, and switching between the two shows the difference letter by letter.
- What happens to digits, spaces and punctuation?
- Spaces separate words and are never counted. Anything else that has no value in the chosen cipher is either ignored and then listed underneath, or refused outright with the character named, depending on which of the two settings you pick. Nothing is dropped in silence either way. Text is limited to 20,000 characters, and a longer paste is refused with its size rather than cut short.
- Is English ordinal the same as simple gematria?
- Yes. English ordinal is the plain a = 1 to z = 26 count that many pages call simple gematria. English reverse runs the alphabet the other way, and a letter's two values always add to 27, which is a quick way to check the tool: A is 1 and 26, M is 13 and 14.
- Is the text uploaded anywhere?
- No. The whole calculator runs in your browser: the text is added up in the tab, never sent to a server, and kept only in this browser's own storage so a reload does not lose your draft. The reset control on this page clears that storage.
