What is ABC notation?

A plain-text way to write music. A letter is a note: C is middle C, lowercase c is the octave above, and each comma or apostrophe after a note moves it down or up another octave. A number after a note multiplies its length and a slash divides it, relative to the L: line, so with L:1/4 a C is a quarter note and C2 a half note. A | is a bar line, z is a rest, ^ is a sharp and _ a flat. The lines at the top set the title (T:), time signature (M:), note length (L:), tempo (Q:) and key and clef (K:).

Why is one of my bars flagged?

Its notes do not add up to the time signature. Every bar is measured exactly, so a 4/4 bar holding five quarter notes reads as 5 beats, 4/4 holds 4, over by 1, and one holding three reads as short by 1. Nothing is changed for you: the bar is listed, its notes turn red on the staff, and clicking the line in the list selects it in the source. A short first bar counts as a pickup, and a short last bar that makes up the difference is accepted too.

Can it play my score back?

Yes. Play sounds every note on a synthesized voice at the written tempo, or at 120 beats a minute if the score has no Q: line. The tone changes with the instrument family you choose, dynamics make notes louder or softer, and repeats are played. Chord symbols in quotes are drawn above the staff but not played. It is a preview for checking the notes, not a recording of the instrument.

How do I save or print the sheet music?

PDF opens your browser's print dialog with only the staff on the page, so choose Save as PDF there. SVG downloads the staff as a vector image, ABC downloads the source as a .abc file, and Copy ABC puts the source on your clipboard. Your latest score is also kept in this browser, so it is still there when you come back.
