Which answer counts as correct?

Answers follow the eight traditional parts of speech taught in school: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection. Many words change class with the sentence, like run in They run daily, where it is a verb, so every item was written so that its highlighted word has one class in that sentence and appears in it only once. Words that textbooks classify differently are never highlighted: articles and other determiners such as the and my, numbers, to before a verb, not, -ing forms, words like after and before that can be a preposition or a conjunction, and words like fast or late that can be an adjective or an adverb.

How does the quiz explain an answer?

After you press Check answer, the page names the right class and gives the reason for that sentence. For The cat slept, it says: cat names an animal, and it is the subject: the one that slept. If you chose a different class, it also shows the definition of the class you chose for comparison, such as: A verb shows an action or a state of being, and it changes form to show tense.

Can I practice only some parts of speech?

Yes. Tick any two or more of the eight classes and set a question count, up to the number of sentences in those classes. The bank has 20 nouns, 18 pronouns, 20 verbs, 20 adjectives, 20 adverbs, 20 prepositions, 18 conjunctions and 18 interjections, and each class shows its number. In a practice session only the classes you picked appear as choices. Questions take the classes in turn, so the mix is as even as the sentences allow, and no sentence repeats within a session.

What happens to my mistakes?

A sentence you answer wrongly is listed under Saved in this browser, with its answer and reason, and stays there until you answer it correctly in a later session. Practice saved mistakes asks all of them again, and at the end of a session Practice these mistakes asks just the ones you missed. In mistake practice each sentence's own class is always among the choices. The saved list is hidden while a session runs, so it cannot give away answers.

Is my progress saved, and is anything sent anywhere?

Your chosen classes, question count, the table of answered and correct questions by class, the number of finished sessions and the saved mistakes are kept in this browser's local storage. Clear progress empties the table, the session count and the saved list, and Start over forgets everything. A session in progress is not saved, but each answer counts in the table as soon as you check it. Your answers are not sent anywhere.

Does the score measure my grammar level?

No. The score counts correct answers among this session's sentences only. It is practice, not a placement test or a measure of proficiency, and the sentences were written for this page rather than taken from a published quiz or exam.

Can I use it with a keyboard or on a phone?
