How does text to emoji work here?

Every whole word or phrase in your text that is on the word list gets that entry's emoji. Replace puts the emoji in place of the word, Append keeps the word and adds a space and the emoji after it, and Prepend puts the emoji and a space before it. Nothing else in the text changes, and a word that is not on the list stays as you typed it.

Why did catalog or concatenate not change when cat is on the list?

Matching is by whole words. A word here is a run of letters, marks and digits, so cat matches in cat's and cat-flap but not inside catalog, cats or cat2. Words that contain a list word are listed as skipped under the result, though a run longer than 256 code units is too long to be a word and is not checked. You can add cats or catalog to the list as entries of their own.

Can I undo just one emoji?

Yes. Every match is numbered under the result with its own Undo, which puts back the word exactly as typed, capitals and the spaces and punctuation around it included. Apply swaps it in again, and Change gives that one match a different emoji without changing the list. Undo all undoes every match at once, and Apply all swaps every undone match back in.

Does it match Cat and CAT as well as cat?

In Any case mode, yes: Cat, cat and CAT all match the list entry cat, and the row of an applied match says any case when its case differed from the list. In Match case mode only the spelling on the list matches, and the other spellings are listed as skipped beside the list word they differ from.

Can I use my own words and emoji?

Yes. Add a word or a phrase of up to three words with up to 8 emoji, change the emoji of any entry, or remove entries. Mapping .json downloads the list, and Import .json reads a list back, either this page's own file or a plain JSON object of words to emoji; an imported list replaces the current one. The list and the two settings are kept in this browser, and your text is not stored.

Is this a translator from English to emoji?

No. It does not translate or read meaning or mood; it only swaps the words on the list. Kitten stays kitten unless kitten is on the list, and each word gets the emoji written beside it. How an emoji looks depends on the fonts of the device showing it.

How long can the text be?

Up to 20,000 characters at a time, counted the way a reader counts them, so an emoji built from several code points counts as one. Longer text gets a message instead of a result and can be swapped in parts. Text whose letters carry many stacked accents is also refused once it passes 200,000 code units.
