How do I put the date on a photo from its EXIF data?

Add the photos, leave EXIF date on Taken (DateTimeOriginal), pick a format, a position and a style, then press Stamp. What happens when a photo has no date, like one sent through a messaging app?

Does the stamped date prove when the photo was taken?

No. The printed date is a label: an EXIF date is whatever the camera or an app wrote, and it can be wrong or changed, and a typed date is whatever you typed. The manifest in the ZIP records for each photo whether its date came from EXIF, and from which field, or was typed by you.

Which time zone is the stamped time in?

Whatever the camera's clock said, as written: the time is printed from the EXIF digits and never converted to your computer's time zone. When the photo also recorded an offset, such as +05:30, you can print it after the time. When it recorded none, none is added, and the manifest says none was recorded.

Will a photo taken in portrait come out sideways?

No. Phones often store a portrait photo sideways and record which way is up in the EXIF orientation tag. The page reads that tag, turns the pixels upright, and sizes and places the label on the upright photo, so a 4032 x 3024 photo with orientation 6 is stamped at 3024 x 4032.

Which files, and how many, can I stamp at once?

JPEG, PNG and WebP, up to 500 photos in a batch. Each photo can be up to 16,384 px a side and 64 megapixels, and one ZIP holds up to 500 MB of stamped photos: past that, download what is stamped and stamp the rest in another batch. A HEIC photo needs exporting to JPEG first.
