Invoice Generator

Fill in the invoice, watch it typeset as you type, and save it as a PDF. Amounts are held as whole cents, the tax is worked out on the summed subtotal rather than line by line, and there is one rounding at the end, so the printed column adds up instead of landing a cent out the way a per-line calculation can. Twenty currencies, three number formats, Letter or A4, and the arithmetic written out under the invoice so you can check it. The client's name, your rates and your payment details stay in this browser: nothing is uploaded, and the PDF is written by your own machine's print engine.

The arithmetic

Every step, in the order it happened. The value before rounding is shown wherever it differs from the value after it.

Download PDF opens your browser's print dialog with only the invoice on the page. Choose Save as PDF as the destination. The file is written by your own machine and never leaves it.

Tax is worked out on the sum, not line by line, and the tax line shows its working. An invoice that taxes every line, rounds each one and adds them up can land a cent away from the same invoice taxed on its subtotal, which is the kind of thing an accounts department bounces. Line amounts and any discount here are whole cents, because they print as money; they are summed exactly; and there is one rounding at the end, on the total, or on the tax line when the tax is already inside your prices. Nothing is uploaded: the invoice, the client and your payment details live in this browser's storage, and Download PDF uses the browser's own print engine.
Accuracy. Line amounts and any discount are whole cents, because they print as money. Tax is not worked out line by line: it is applied to the summed subtotal, and there is one rounding at the end, on the total, or on the tax line when tax is already inside the prices. Tax rules and what an invoice must legally show differ by country; the fields are yours to fill.

Common questions

What does an invoice need to include?
The fields here are the ones almost every invoice carries: who it is from, who it is for, an invoice number, the date it was issued, the date payment is due, a line for each thing billed with its quantity and rate, the subtotal, any discount, any tax, the total due, how to pay, and a notes line for terms. What is legally required differs by country and by what you are selling, so check your own rules before you send it.
How do I add tax to an invoice?
Type the rate into the Tax % box in the strip under the invoice. It is applied to the subtotal after any discount, not to each line separately, and the tax line shows its working. If your prices already include the tax, tick 'Already in the prices' and the tool works out how much of the total is tax rather than adding more on top.
How do I download the invoice as a PDF?
Choose Download PDF. That opens your browser's own print dialog with everything except the invoice removed from the page, so the PDF has no toolbars, no form and no watermark. Set the destination to Save as PDF and confirm. Pick Letter or A4 first if the default is wrong for you.
Where is my invoice data stored?
In this browser, and nowhere else. The invoice you are working on and the last 20 you started are kept in your browser's local storage, which never leaves the machine. There is no account and no upload, which matters when the document carries a client's name and your bank details. Forget removes any saved invoice, and clearing your browser's site data removes all of them.
Can I reuse a client or last month's invoice?
Yes. Recent invoices lists the last 20 by number, client, date and total, and Reopen brings one back complete with its client and lines, ready to edit and renumber. New invoice goes the other way: it counts the number up, clears the client and the lines, and keeps your own details and payment details for the next bill.
Does it round every line, or the total?
Line amounts and any discount are whole cents, because they print as money and a column that does not add up gets an invoice bounced. The tax is different: it is worked out on the summed subtotal rather than line by line, and there is one rounding at the end. Three lines of 10.00 at 6.25% tax come to 31.88 here; a tool that taxes each line and rounds each one gets 31.89. When the tax is already inside your prices the total needs no rounding, so the tax line carries it instead. The full working is printed under the invoice, including the value before rounding.
Which currencies and number formats does it handle?
Twenty currencies with their own symbols and minor units, including the yen and the won, which have no decimal places at all. Numbers can be written 1,234.56, 1.234,56 or 1 234,56, and the setting applies to what you type as well as what prints, so a comma is never quietly read as a thousands separator when you meant a decimal point.
