Can I look up my family's coat of arms here?

No. This tool does not look up surnames or historical arms, and nothing it makes is an official or registered coat of arms. It is a design tool: you build heraldic-style art from original shapes and your own choices, for a game, a club, a classroom, a story or a gift.

What can I put on the shield?

Pick a heater, French, Spanish or kite shield, then divide the field plain, per pale, per fess, per bend, per bend sinister, per chevron, per saltire, quartered, gyronny of eight, paly of six or barry of six. Each part of the field takes its own colour. Add ordinaries (chief, fess, pale, bend, bend sinister, chevron, cross, saltire or bordure), charges (star, cross, roundel, annulet, lozenge, crescent, heart, crown, tower, sun, key or mountain), symbols you upload and one motto banner under the shield.

What do or, argent and azure mean?

They are the heraldic names for colours, called tinctures: or is gold, argent is silver or white, azure is blue, gules is red, vert is green, purpure is purple and sable is black. Each colour picker offers those seven as swatches, and the layer list names a colour that way. Any other colour you choose is shown by its hex code.

How do I move, resize or turn a charge?

Drag it on the preview, or drag one of its corner handles to resize it: the box grows or shrinks around the same centre. You can also type a centre, a size from 8 to 560 and a rotation from -180 to 180 degrees. With the preview focused, the arrow keys move the selected charge 1 unit (10 with Shift), + and - change its size by 4, and [ and ] turn it 15 degrees.

Can I use my own symbol or logo?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or SVG and it becomes a layer you can move, resize, turn and clip to the shield. A photo or bitmap is redrawn as a PNG no larger than 1024 pixels on its longest side; an SVG is drawn at 1024 pixels on its longest side, or 512 by 512 if it states no size. An SVG that links to an outside file is refused with a message saying so, because a symbol here is always embedded in your file and never linked. A PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or BMP image that declares more than 120 megapixels is refused before the browser opens it, whether you upload it or it is embedded in an SVG, and so is a photo or bitmap upload whose pixel size cannot be read from its header.

Which files can I download?

An SVG with a 400 by 560 viewBox, in which the shield, charges and banner stay as vector shapes and uploaded symbols travel inside as PNG data; a PNG at 400 x 560, 800 x 1120 or 1600 x 2240 pixels, transparent unless you pick a background colour; and a coat-of-arms.json project that you can open here again with every layer editable. Copy SVG puts the SVG markup on your clipboard.

How long can the motto be?

Up to 32 characters. Short mottos are set at full size and longer ones are set smaller so they fit the ribbon. Past 32, the motto field says how many characters you have and the banner keeps the last motto that fitted. The motto that appears at first is only an example, and it is marked as one.

This browser remembers your design under this tool's own storage, except uploaded symbols, which are kept only until you close the page. Download the .json project to keep a design with its symbols. Nothing you make is sent to a server.

Coat of Arms Maker
