Paver Calculator

Type the patio as one rectangle or several, then tell the page what you are buying in whichever way the quote is written: the paver's face size, 200 by 100 mm or 8 by 4 inches, or the coverage one pack is sold as, 0.48 m² a pack. Retailer calculators take one of those two and hide the other, which is why two of them disagree about the same patio. Here the joint between the pavers is a field rather than an assumption, and the waste is a percentage you set, with the count it added shown beside the total: a 5 m by 2 m patio of 200 by 100 mm pavers is 500 laid tight, 550 with a tenth of waste and 28 packs of 20, while the same patio with a 3 mm joint needs 479 before waste. Area, pieces, waste and packs stay four separate numbers, so you can check the line on a quote that looks wrong.

Common questions

How many pavers are in a square metre or a square foot?
It depends entirely on the paver, which is why the page asks for yours. A 200 by 100 mm paver laid tight covers 0.02 m², so 50 of them fit a square metre and a 10 m² patio takes 500. Allow for a 3 mm joint and each one occupies 203 by 103 mm instead, which is 47.8 to the square metre, so the same patio takes 479. A 400 by 400 mm slab is 6.25 to the square metre, and 10 m² of them is 63 once the part slab is rounded up. In imperial, a 4 by 8 inch brick is 32 square inches against the 144 in a square foot, so 4.5 bricks fill a square foot and 100 square feet takes 450 of them, or 431 once a 3 mm joint is counted. Type your own figures and the page works the same arithmetic on them.
How much waste should I allow?
The page adds whatever percentage you type and shows what it added, because the right figure is a property of your layout rather than of the pavers. On the 500 paver patio above, 5 percent is 525, 10 percent is 550 and 15 percent is 575. A straight running bond against square walls wastes least, since most cut pieces are halves that go back in at the other end of the course. A 45 degree herringbone or a diagonal layout wastes most, because every paver along every edge is a cut and the offcut is usually an unusable triangle. Curves, circles and a lot of short returns sit at the top of the range too. Buying from the same batch matters as well: concrete pavers are dyed in batches, so a handful bought later can be a visible shade out.
Should I use the pack coverage or the paver size?
Use whichever number your quote actually gives, which is the reason both are here. Coverage per pack is the figure on a manufacturer's pallet or price list, and it usually already includes the joint they expect, so the page takes it exactly as entered and infers no joint of its own. Paver size is the route when you know what you are laying but not how it is packed, or when you want to see how the joint changes the count. If you have both, try them one after the other: 20 pavers of 0.02 m² is a pack covering 0.4 m², and both routes then give 550 pavers and 28 packs for the same patio. If they disagree, the pack figure is being quoted with a different joint from the one you typed.
Does the joint width really change how many pavers I need?
Yes, and by more than people expect on a small unit. A paver in a continuous field owns the joint on two of its four edges, the joints on the other two belonging to its neighbours, so the page adds the joint once to the width and once to the length. A 200 by 100 mm paver with a 3 mm joint is counted over 203 by 103 mm, which moves the count from 50 a square metre to 47.8, about 4 percent fewer. At 5 mm it is 46.5 a square metre. Leave the joint at zero for a butt joint, and note that a pack coverage figure normally has the joint in it already, which is why the joint field is ignored in that mode.
What does this calculator not cover?
It counts material for an area and stops there. It does not size a base, set a slope or specify an edge restraint, it does not tell you how to cut around a manhole or a step, and it has no opinion on whether a given paver suits what will be driven or walked on it. Those are decisions with a structure behind them and they belong with the supplier or whoever specifies the job. There is also no price list here: the cost is your own price per pack multiplied by the packs the page counted, because prices are local and they move.
Is anything uploaded, and does it cost anything?
No. The arithmetic runs in your browser, there is no account and nothing is sent anywhere. Your areas, the paver, the joint, the waste and the units are kept in your browser's own storage so the page opens where you left it, and clearing your browser data clears that too.
