Common questions

One of my words is not in the puzzle. Where did it go?

Any accepted word the maker cannot place appears by name in the list below the grid, and the word bank contains only placed words. Try a larger grid or more directions. A word longer than the grid side is refused with its required size. Placement uses a bounded search, so an unplaced word does not prove that no arrangement could fit it.

Can I print the same worksheet again next term?

Yes. The same word list, grid size, directions and seed rebuild the same layout. Keep those settings for another printout. Reroll changes the seed to arrange the same words differently, and this browser remembers the last settings when local storage is available.

Does the printout give the answers away?

Not unless you ask it to. Print gives you one page, and on it the grid, the word bank, and a header line naming the puzzle and its seed so the same worksheet can be rebuilt later. Ticking the answer key box adds a second page after it, with the same grid marked and every word listed as a row, a column and a direction counted from the top left square, so you can print both and hand out only the first. On screen the Answer key button marks the grid and lists the positions, and there is a Copy button for the key as plain text.

What are the limits on the grid and the word list?

The grid is 5 to 40 squares on a side, and the list takes up to 120 words after blanks and repeats are removed. A word has to be at least two letters, because a single letter would match almost anywhere in a filled grid. Entries are read one per line, or separated by commas or semicolons. Every entry goes into the grid in capitals with punctuation removed, an accent mark comes off its letter rather than taking the letter with it, a letter like ø, æ or ß goes in as O, AE or SS, and a two-word entry like ice cream goes in as one run of letters the way a printed puzzle always shows it. An entry with no letters at all, like 123, is reported rather than silently ignored.

Can words run backwards and diagonally?

Yes. Eight directions are available through toggles covering horizontal, vertical and diagonal placements in both directions. The maker opens with across left to right, down, diagonal down and right, and diagonal up and right. Choose All eight or Forwards only, or turn individual directions on and off. These choices change the allowed placements; they do not assign a rated difficulty.

Where do the other letters in the grid come from, and is anything uploaded?

Filler letters are drawn from the A to Z letters used in your accepted words. The grid and key are built in this browser without uploading the word list. Settings are remembered in this browser when local storage is available.

Can I make a Spanish vocabulary word search?

Yes, for a puzzle that normalizes accents: enter your Spanish word list and review the word bank before printing. This maker removes accent marks and punctuation when placing words, so año becomes ANO and canción becomes CANCION. Use another puzzle maker when preserving ñ or accented letters as distinct grid characters is part of the lesson.

Can I make a word search with names or a party theme?

Yes. Paste the names or theme words as your own list, one entry per line or separated by commas or semicolons. Use a Christmas, Halloween or wedding list, for example. Spaces and punctuation are removed and entries become A to Z capitals, so Mary Jane becomes MARYJANE. Review the word bank before printing; there are no built-in themed pictures or word collections.

Can I make an easy puzzle for a class or a harder one for adults?

For a simpler worksheet, use short words, a smaller grid, and only Across, left to right and Down. A larger grid and All eight permit longer searches and backward words. Those are editable choices, not a measured difficulty or a grade placement. The maker accepts up to 120 distinct normalized words, including lists of 25 or 30.

Can I save the printable word search as a PDF?

Press Print, then choose Save as PDF if your browser or operating system offers it. Select Print the answer key too when you want the key on a separate page after the puzzle. This uses the system print destination; the maker has no direct PDF or SVG download button.

Can I use French, German or other language word lists?

The grid supports A to Z capitals. Accent marks are removed, and the German letter ß becomes SS when capitalized; école becomes ECOLE. Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi and Japanese characters are removed rather than placed, so the maker does not support grids in those scripts. Review the normalized word bank to check whether it suits your lesson.

Can I solve the puzzle interactively on this page?

The page builds and previews the puzzle and can show its answer key. It has no drag-to-select game, solver for an existing grid, clue questions, hidden-message layout or custom grid shape. Print the sheet to solve it on paper, or copy the grid as plain text.
