Where these numbers come from
Nothing here is generated from a pattern. Each draw is an index into one of the reservations below, published by the country’s own numbering authority, so a number outside them is not merely unlikely. This tool cannot represent one.

Common questions
- Are these numbers safe to use in tests?
- Yes, and that is the entire reason to use this one. Every number comes from a range the national regulator has reserved for fiction and forbidden from assignment: 555-0100 to 555-0199 in the North American Numbering Plan, Ofcom's 07700 900000–900999 and 020 7946 0xxx in the UK, and equivalent reserved blocks elsewhere. These cannot be allocated to a subscriber, so a stray test SMS has nowhere real to land.
- What is wrong with other random phone number generators?
- Most build a number that merely matches the country's format: a valid area code, a valid exchange, random digits. That is a live number belonging to somebody. Seed a test database with ten thousand of them, wire up an SMS provider, and you have sent ten thousand messages to real people. Format-valid is not the same as safe, and the distinction only shows up once it has already gone wrong.
- Will these pass phone number validation?
- They pass format and structural validation, including libphonenumber's checks for a correctly shaped national number, because the reserved ranges were designed to look real. They will not pass a live carrier lookup or an HLR query, which is correct behaviour. A number reserved for fiction should fail a check that asks whether a real subscriber exists.
- Which countries are supported?
- The United States and Canada via the NANP 555-01XX block, the United Kingdom via Ofcom's drama ranges for mobile, London, Leeds, Bristol and Reading plus the 01632 no-area range, Australia via the ACMA fictional ranges, and Germany via its reserved fiction block. Only ranges with a documented regulator reservation are included. If a country has no such block, it is not offered rather than being faked.
- Can I generate numbers in bulk?
- Yes, up to the size of the reserved block itself, which is the honest limit. The reserved ranges are finite: roughly 29,200 distinct numbers for the US, 20,000 for the UK, 5,200 for Canada, 4,151 for Australia and 1,000 for Germany. Ask for more unique numbers than a block holds and the tool says so rather than repeating itself silently or drifting outside the safe range. Generation is instant and happens in your browser, so there is no rate limit and no server cost, only the arithmetic ceiling of how many safe numbers exist.
- Why 555 numbers specifically?
- The 555 exchange was set aside in North America decades ago so films and television could show a phone number without flooding a real household with calls. Only 555-0100 through 555-0199 are formally reserved for fictional use. The rest of the 555 range can be and is assigned, mostly to information services. The tool uses only the reserved hundred, which is the part that is genuinely safe.
