UPC-A Barcode Generator

This page opens on UPC-A, the 12-digit retail barcode used in the US and Canada. Type the first 11 digits and the check digit is calculated and appended, or paste all 12 and the last digit is verified, so a typo shows up here instead of at the till. Download the barcode as a PNG at double resolution or copy it as SVG for print.

Common questions

I only have 11 digits. Is that enough?
Yes. A UPC-A number is 11 digits plus one check digit. Type the 11 and the generator works out the twelfth from them with alternating weights of 3 and 1. If you paste 12, it checks the last one instead and says which digit it expected.
What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A is an EAN-13 whose first digit is 0, printed with 12 digits instead of 13. The bars are the same, so scanners outside North America read a UPC-A as the EAN-13 with a leading zero. Switch to EAN-13 above when your number has 13 digits.
Where do I get a UPC number for my product?
From GS1, which licenses company prefixes and the product numbers made from them. Retailers and marketplaces check that a UPC is registered to the brand selling it. This generator draws any valid number correctly, but it cannot issue one to you.
What does the Random button make here?
A valid UPC-A that starts with 4. Numbers starting 4 fall in the GS1 range kept for a company's internal use, so a random one is never a number issued to a product sold in shops. Use them for shelf tags, mockups and testing a scanner.
Does this make UPC-E, the short version?
No. UPC-E, the six-digit zero-suppressed form found on small packs, is not drawn here. Every UPC-E number expands to a 12-digit UPC-A with the same product number, and this page draws that UPC-A.

Exact. Check digits and bar patterns follow each symbology's specification, and every encoder is tested by reading its bars back with an independent decoder. Print at a size your scanner can resolve. Encoding correctly does not guarantee a scan off a phone screen.
