Octal to Text

Convert text bytes in octal, with three digits per byte on output. This page selects Octal and Auto; choose Bytes to text to validate pasted octal, or Text to bytes to encode digit-only text. 110 151 and compact 110151 both decode to Hi. Values above 377 octal cannot represent one byte.

Auto guesses from the digits. Choose Text to bytes to encode digit-only text, or Bytes to text to validate a byte sequence. Compact runs use 3 digits per byte; short space-separated groups are byte values.

Common questions

How do I convert text to binary, including numbers typed as text?
Choose Binary and Text to bytes. Each UTF-8 byte is written with eight digits and bytes are separated by spaces. Hi becomes 01001000 01101001. The text 101 becomes the bytes for three characters, not the integer five. Text to Binary opens this explicit encoding mode.
Can I translate binary with no spaces?
Yes. A compact run such as 0100100001101001 decodes to Hi. It must contain complete eight-digit byte groups. Space-separated groups can be shorter when they represent values from 0 to 255. A long run with an incomplete byte is refused; no missing bit is guessed.
Why does 00101 or a five-bit value show no readable letter?
00101 is the byte value 5, an ASCII control character, not the letter E in UTF-8. The tool names the presence of otherwise invisible controls. It does not implement Baudot, ITA2, an A1Z26 alphabet or another five-bit cipher. To convert a binary integer to a decimal number, use Number Base Converter.
Does it handle ASCII, Russian, accents, Japanese and emoji?
ASCII is the first 128 values of UTF-8, so ASCII text works directly. Other scripts and emoji occupy multiple bytes; for example é is 11000011 10101001. This changes the representation of text and does not translate between human languages. UTF-16, Latin-1 and other legacy encodings are not decoded.
What happens to bad binary digits or invalid UTF-8?
Choose Bytes to text to validate a byte sequence. Digits outside the selected base, incomplete compact bytes, octal values above 255 and invalid UTF-8 stop conversion. Auto can interpret non-byte-looking input as ordinary text, so its direction label should match the job you intended. No replacement character is inserted for malformed input.
Can I convert octal or hexadecimal text bytes?
Choose Octal for three-digit bytes or Hex for two-digit bytes. Octal to Text opens the octal mode in either direction. Text to Hex provides additional ASCII-only validation, separators, prefixes and a strict UTF-8 decoder; it is the preferred page for hex text conversion.
Can I convert a binary file, image, audio recording or source program?
This page accepts pasted text and byte digits. It does not import or export files, recognize pictures, decode binary application formats, provide an API or generate programming-language solutions. A binary integer, file format, Base64 string and UTF-8 byte sequence are separate representations.
What is remembered between visits?
Base, direction and a compatible input draft are remembered locally when you explicitly change them. Opening a preset does not overwrite other saved choices or insert an incompatible draft. Conversion runs in this browser; deliberate clipboard copies are your own exports.
How can I decode ASCII binary by hand?
Split the input into eight-bit bytes. Read the bit positions as 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1, and add the weights whose bit is 1. For 01001000 the sum is 64 + 8 = 72, which is H in the ASCII table. ASCII to Hex includes all 128 ASCII values with their binary bytes and control names. Other Unicode characters use UTF-8 sequences of multiple bytes; do not look up each byte as a separate letter.

Exact for valid Unicode text and UTF-8 bytes. Invalid digits, incomplete compact byte groups, invalid UTF-8 and unpaired Unicode surrogates are refused instead of substituted.
