AMA Citation Generator

This page opens the citation generator on AMA Manual of Style 11th edition, the American Medical Association style used in medicine and the health sciences. Enter each source in the order you cite it and the references are numbered to match: surnames with initials and no periods, up to six authors before et al., journal details as 2020;12(3):45-67, a doi: prefix for DOIs, and Published and Accessed dates for web pages. The in-text form is a superscript number.

MANUAL METADATA · NO SOURCE LOOKUP

Enter what you know. Missing facts stay visibly incomplete; nothing is invented or fetched.

Source 1

Incomplete: missing title, author, year; fill these fields before treating the entry as complete.

Fill in a title, author or year and the formatted entry appears here.

The formatter applies the selected style to the facts you supplied. It does not verify a source, resolve a DOI, change your title capitalization, or fill an unknown author or date.

Common questions

How many authors does AMA list?
Up to six. With seven or more, the first three are listed followed by et al., which is what this formatter prints.
Should the journal name be abbreviated?
AMA uses the National Library of Medicine abbreviation, for example JAMA or N Engl J Med. Type the abbreviated title in the journal field; the tool prints exactly what you enter.
Does AMA 11 include the publisher's city?
No. The 11th edition dropped the place of publication, so even if you fill in the place, a book ends with only the publisher and year, as in "Simon & Schuster; 2014."
Is AMA the same as Vancouver?
They share numbered references in citation order but differ in detail, such as how online sources and DOIs are written. Both are on this page; choose the one your journal or course names.

APA, Harvard and Vancouver use bundled CSL styles; MLA 9, Chicago 18, AMA 11 and IEEE follow tested rules for books, journal articles and web pages. It does not verify sources, resolve DOI metadata, change title capitalization, invent missing authors or dates, or decide which style your institution requires.
