Chicago Style Citation Generator

This page opens the citation generator on Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition, notes and bibliography. Enter a book, journal article or web page and it formats the bibliography entry and a short note for each source, in the form Chicago allows when the work also has a bibliography. Switch the style to Chicago 18 author-date for a reference list with in-text citations such as (Lovelace 2020). Books take an optional place of publication, journal articles take volume, issue and pages, and an undated web page uses its accessed date or n.d.

MANUAL METADATA · NO SOURCE LOOKUP

Enter what you know. Missing facts stay visibly incomplete; nothing is invented or fetched.

Source 1

Incomplete: missing title, author, year; fill these fields before treating the entry as complete.

Fill in a title, author or year and the formatted entry appears here.

The formatter applies the selected style to the facts you supplied. It does not verify a source, resolve a DOI, change your title capitalization, or fill an unknown author or date.

Common questions

Does it make footnotes?
It makes short notes. Walter Isaacson's book The Innovators gives the note "1. Isaacson, The Innovators." Chicago permits short notes for every citation when the paper includes a full bibliography. Notes are shown as plain text, so italicize the book title after you paste, and add the page you cite at the end of each note.
What changed in the 18th edition?
Place of publication became optional for books, and notes for works with three or more authors use the first author followed by et al. The bibliography lists up to six authors, and the first three followed by et al. when there are more.
Can I use this for Turabian?
Turabian's styles are adapted from Chicago. Use notes and bibliography or author-date to match your assignment and fill in the place of publication, which Turabian 9th edition still includes.
How are two works by the same author in the same year handled in author-date?
They get letters in reference-list order, such as 2020a and 2020b, and the in-text citations use the same letters.

APA, Harvard and Vancouver use bundled CSL styles; MLA 9, Chicago 18, AMA 11 and IEEE follow tested rules for books, journal articles and web pages. It does not verify sources, resolve DOI metadata, change title capitalization, invent missing authors or dates, or decide which style your institution requires.
