MLA Citation Generator

This page opens the citation generator on MLA 9th edition. Enter a book, journal article or web page and it builds the Works Cited entry and the parenthetical in-text citation: author names inverted for the first author, titles of articles and pages in quotation marks, the container, volume and issue, publisher, year, pages, and a DOI as an https://doi.org/ link or a URL without the https://. Entries sort alphabetically, a second work by the same author starts with three hyphens, and an accessed date is added for web pages when you give one. Copy with italics keeps container and book titles italic in Word or Google Docs.

MANUAL METADATA · NO SOURCE LOOKUP

Enter what you know. Missing facts stay visibly incomplete; nothing is invented or fetched.

Source 1

Incomplete: missing title, author, year; fill these fields before treating the entry as complete.

Fill in a title, author or year and the formatted entry appears here.

The formatter applies the selected style to the facts you supplied. It does not verify a source, resolve a DOI, change your title capitalization, or fill an unknown author or date.

Common questions

How does MLA 9 list two or three or more authors?
Two authors print as Lovelace, Ada, and Alan Turing. Three or more print the first author followed by et al. The in-text citation follows the same pattern: (Lovelace and Turing) or (Lovelace et al.).
Does it add page numbers to the in-text citation?
No. The parenthetical shows the author, or a short title when there is no author or two works share one. Add the page you are quoting, for example (Lovelace 42), because the tool cannot know which page you used.
Should I include the accessed date?
MLA 9 treats it as optional and recommends it for web pages that have no publication date or may change. Fill in Accessed and the entry ends with the date in day, month, year order, such as "Accessed 14 Mar. 2025."
Can I make an MLA annotated bibliography?
Yes. Tick Annotated bibliography and write your annotation under each source; it prints below that Works Cited entry.
Is this MLA 8 or MLA 9?
MLA 9, published in 2021. For the three source types here the core elements match MLA 8, so the entries also suit a class still using the 8th edition. MLA 7 differs (it adds the medium, such as Print or Web), so it is not produced.

APA, Harvard and Vancouver use bundled CSL styles; MLA 9, Chicago 18, AMA 11 and IEEE follow tested rules for books, journal articles and web pages. It does not verify sources, resolve DOI metadata, change title capitalization, invent missing authors or dates, or decide which style your institution requires.
