Days untilReading today's date.
Holidays come from rules, not a list of dates. Christmas, Halloween and New Year are fixed; Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Mother’s Day the second Sunday of May, Memorial Day the last Monday of May; Easter is the Western date from the Gregorian formula; Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. The moveable ones follow the US calendar. For a span between any two dates use the date calculator; for hours and minutes between two moments, the duration calculator.
Common questions
- When is New Year's Day?
- New Year's Day is 1 January. 2027 begins on a Friday, 2028 on a Saturday and 2029 on a Monday. The page shows the weekday for the year it is counting to.
- How is the countdown worked out?
- New Year's Day is a fixed date. On 1 January itself the page reads Today; on any other day it counts the whole calendar days from today in your time zone to the next 1 January, and the clock under the number counts down the hours, minutes and seconds to midnight at the end of New Year's Eve where you are.
- Is this the countdown to midnight on New Year's Eve?
- Yes. Midnight at the start of 1 January is the same moment as midnight at the end of 31 December, so the clock reads zero exactly when the year turns on your device's clock. The day count changes at each local midnight along the way.
- How many working days are left in the year?
- The Working days row counts the Mondays to Fridays after today up to and including 1 January, so subtract one if 1 January falls on a weekday and you want the working days left in the old year. Public holidays are not taken out.
Days are counted on the civil calendar from today in your time zone, and holidays are computed from their rules (Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Easter from the Gregorian formula), so the countdown is right in every year. Hours and seconds tick from your device's clock.
