How does small text work?

Unicode has superscript versions of most letters, added for phonetics and maths, and the tool swaps each letter for its superscript. They are separate characters, so the small size travels with the text into any field that accepts Unicode, without any formatting.

Why is the letter q not small?

There is no superscript q in the blocks that common fonts cover. Rather than substitute a different character that looks roughly right and reads wrong, the tool leaves q, and Q, as typed. Every other letter, the digits and the signs + - = ( ) have superscript forms: ²⁺²⁼⁴.

What is the difference between small text and small caps?

Small text is raised and tiny, ˡⁱᵏᵉ ᵗʰⁱˢ. Small caps keeps the text on the baseline and replaces every letter with a small capital, ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛʜɪꜱ, which reads more easily in a longer line. Both rows are on this page. Small caps has no form for x, which stays as typed, and no digits.

Do capitals stay capitals in small text?

Where Unicode has a superscript capital (A, B, D, E, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, R, T, U, V and W) the tool uses it. For C, F, S, X, Y and Z, which have none, it uses the lowercase superscript so the word stays small instead of jumping in height. Q, like q, stays as typed.

Is tiny text readable for everyone?

It is small by design, so it is harder to read on a phone, and screen readers often read the letters as modifier symbols or skip them. Use it for a flourish, not for anything someone has to read.
