How do I multiply a fraction by a whole number?
Write the whole number over 1 and multiply across. 5/8 × 24 is 5/8 × 24/1, so the top is 5 × 24 = 120 and the bottom is 8 × 1 = 8, giving 120/8, which reduces to 15. Only the numerator is multiplied by the whole number, never the denominator as well: that mistake gives 120/192, which is 5/8 all over again.
