Semi Truck Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out the fuel for a run and the fuel cost per mile from the miles, the truck's mpg and the diesel price. The page opens on 500 miles at 6.5 mpg and 3.50 a gallon: 76.923 gallons, 269.23 for the run and 0.5385 a mile. Those are starting figures, not measurements of your truck, so replace them with the mpg from your own fuel log and the price on your receipts.

Enter the price in whatever currency you buy fuel in. The answer comes back in the same one, because the arithmetic never touches an exchange rate.

    500 mi ÷ 6.5 mpg = 76.923077 US gal; 76.923077 US gal × 3.50 = 269.23
Two gallons, and one unit that runs backwards. Choose the gallon used by your fuel price and efficiency figure. L/100km measures fuel per distance, so a lower number means less fuel used, and it multiplies where mpg divides. Every conversion the answer needs is written into the working above with the constant it used, so you can check which gallon went where.

Common questions

How do I work out fuel cost per mile for a truck?
Divide the price per gallon by the truck's mpg: 3.50 divided by 6.5 is 0.5385 a mile. Multiply that by the miles in a run for the fuel cost of the run. The Per mile and per km row gives the figure for whatever you enter.
Does it count empty miles?
Only the miles you enter. Put in the total the truck will drive, loaded and empty, and the cost covers both. Switch on Round trip when the truck comes back the same way.
Does it include tolls, fuel tax reporting or a reefer unit?
No. It prices the fuel the engine burns over the distance you enter. Tolls, IFTA reporting and fuel burned by a refrigeration unit are not part of the sum.
Does it work for a pickup, a moving truck or an RV?
Yes. Enter that vehicle's own mpg in place of the 6.5. The sum is the same for any vehicle that burns liquid fuel.

Exact arithmetic on the numbers entered: distance divided by efficiency, times price. Real consumption varies with speed, load and weather, so treat the result as the figure your own inputs imply.
