Grade points on the 4.0 scale
A+ and A are both worth 4.0. The most common US convention. Weighting is on, so the last two columns are in use, at +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB. Change either figure above to match your district.

A failed course stays at zero however it is weighted: the honors and AP bonus applies only to a passing grade.
Common questions
- How do you calculate a high school GPA?
- Give each course its grade points, multiply by the credits it carries, add those up, and divide by the total credits. The six courses on this page are 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 over one credit each, which is 22 quality points over 6 credits, so 22 ÷ 6 = 3.67. The tool prints that whole line, not just the answer.
- How many credits is a high school course?
- One credit for a year long course and a half for a semester course, at most US high schools. That is why every row here starts at 1 rather than the 3 a college course carries. Put whatever your transcript says in the Credits column, or switch Credits to Equal and every course will weigh the same.
- Should my GPA be weighted or unweighted?
- Both figures are on screen, so you do not have to choose blind. Weighting adds points for harder courses, and with every course here set to Regular the two numbers are the same 3.67. Set a course to Honors or AP in the Level column and the weighted figure rises while the unweighted one stays put. Colleges usually recalculate to their own scale anyway, which is why the tool shows the pair rather than one number.
- What GPA is an A minus average?
- 3.7 on this scale, since an A minus is worth 3.7 points and an average of nothing but A minus grades divides straight back to 3.7. An A average is 4.0, a B plus average is 3.3 and a B average is 3.0. The table under the tool shows every letter and what it is worth, including the A plus, which is 4.0 here and 4.3 on the other scale in daily use.
- Do pass or fail courses count?
- No. P, NP, W and I carry no quality points anywhere, so they cannot move an average. Pick one of them in the Grade column and the course drops out of both the credits and the points, and the tool lists it by name under the result so nothing disappears quietly.
Exact arithmetic on the scale shown: quality points are grade points times credits, and the GPA is their sum divided by credits. Which points a school assigns to an A+ and how it weights honors and AP courses vary; the controls state the convention used, and your registrar's figure follows their own.
