Percentage to GPA Calculator

Enter a percentage for each course and the GPA credits it carries. This page opens in Percent mode with weighting off: a 3-credit course at 90% maps to A− and 3.7 points, while a 2-credit course at 80% maps to B− and 2.7 points. Their credit-weighted GPA is (3 × 3.7 + 2 × 2.7) ÷ 5 = 3.30. The displayed plus/minus bands are a stated convention, not a universal national or institution conversion. Decimal marks use the lower band edge: 92.9% is still A− because A begins at 93%.

Percentage marks are banded to a letter before points are assigned, so a 92.9 is an A− and a 93 is an A. P, NP, W and I can still be typed into the Mark column.

Bands include the number shown and run up to the next one, so a 92.9 is an A− and a 93 is an A. Marks above 100 count as an A.

The scale is a convention, and this page names the one it is using. Most US schools map an A to 4.0 and an A+ to 4.0 as well; some give the A+ a 4.3, and weighting for honors and AP courses is set district by district. That pick is a control here rather than an assumption, and the table above shows every mapping currently in use. Finite browser arithmetic: quality points are grade points times credits, and GPA is their sum divided by GPA credits, displayed to two decimals. Supplied points receive no extra bonus; letter and percentage inputs use the displayed convention. Your registrar determines which courses count.

Common questions

How is percentage converted to GPA here?
Each course percentage is mapped to a letter using the displayed bands, then to that letter’s grade points. Multiply those points by the course’s GPA credits, add the quality points, and divide by total GPA credits. This course-by-course banding is different from multiplying an overall percentage by 4/100.
Are 70%, 80% and 90% equal to 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 GPA?
With the plus/minus bands on this page, 70% is C− and 1.7 points, 80% is B− and 2.7 points, and 90% is A− and 3.7 points. A course using whole-letter or other institution bands can assign different values. Use the convention printed here only when it matches the grades you are interpreting.
Does this convert any percentage or 10-point GPA to a 4.0 GPA?
No. An aggregate percentage or a GPA on another ladder does not necessarily retain the course grades, credits and policies needed for conversion. This page accepts individual course percentages under one displayed plus/minus convention; it does not choose a country’s grading policy, linearly rescale a 10-point GPA, or produce an official admission conversion.
What happens to decimal marks such as 92.9%?
Bands include their lower edge and stop before the next one. A− includes 90% up to, but not including, 93%, so 92.9% gives 3.7 points. At 93% the course becomes A and 4.0 points. No instructor rounding rule is applied before this mapping.
Do course credits, pass/fail grades and bonuses matter?
Credits determine the average’s weights; Equal gives each included course the same weight. Under this tool’s convention, P, NP, W and I contribute neither GPA credits nor quality points. Weighting starts off on this page; switch it on only for an explicitly chosen honors/AP/IB bonus convention. Your institution’s exclusions and bonuses can differ.
