Fractions Quiz

On a first visit this quiz opens on fractions: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them, and finding a fraction of a whole number, with denominators from 2 to 12 unless you change the range. Type a fraction, a mixed number or an exact decimal, or pick from four choices, and the working is shown line by line, from a common denominator or a reciprocal to lowest terms.

The range sets the numbers each question is built from: both numbers in addition, subtraction and multiplication, the divisor and the answer in division, the denominators in fractions, and the number itself in place value.

Review

No mistakes or revealed answers so far.

Type an answer and press Enter to check it, then Enter again for the next question. Fractions can be typed as 3/4, as a mixed number such as 1 1/4, or as an exact decimal such as 0.75. Whole-number answers take commas, so 4,762 and 4762 are the same.

Accuracy. Every question comes from a fixed set of generated templates (arithmetic, place value, fractions, and one-step equations and proportions), and every answer is checked exactly, with equivalent fractions such as 3/4 and 6/8 both accepted. The same seed and settings give the same quiz, and revealed answers count as assisted and stay out of your unassisted score. It is practice, not a placement test: it is not aligned to any official curriculum and cannot predict an exam result.

Common questions

Do I have to give the answer in lowest terms?
No. Any answer with the same value is marked right, so 6/8 counts for 3/4, 1 1/4 counts for 5/4 and 0.75 counts for 3/4, and the feedback shows the lowest-terms form beside it. A rounded decimal is not exact, so 0.333 is not accepted for 1/3.
How are the fraction questions built?
Each fraction in a question has a top number smaller than its bottom number, and the bottom numbers come from the range you set. In a subtraction the larger fraction comes first, so the answer is never negative. Dividing by a fraction is worked as multiplying by its reciprocal, and a fraction of a number such as 3/4 of 8 always comes out whole.
Does this page keep its own progress?
Yes. The fractions quiz is saved in this browser separately from the main math quiz, so a reload picks up at the same question here, and your settings on the main quiz page stay as you left them. Start over at the top of the page clears this quiz, the main math quiz and the other topic page's save.
Can I switch to another topic?
Yes. The Topic buttons under Quiz settings still work here, so you can choose arithmetic, place value, equations, proportions or a mix of all five.
