Marathon Pace Calculator

Turn a marathon goal time into the pace per kilometre and per mile it takes, or a training pace into the finish it predicts, over the official 42.195 km. The splits table lists every kilometre or mile at an even pace, and the chart under the tool runs from 2:30:00 to 6:00:00 in five-minute steps so a goal can be read off without typing anything.

Time reads as h:mm:ss or mm:ss, pace as m:ss, and a bare number is minutes. Changing a unit converts the value with it, and the Race seg sets the official distance: a half marathon is 21.0975 km, not 21.1.

Race distances are the official ones. A marathon is 42.195 km and a half is 21.0975 km. Typing 26.2 or 13.1 miles shortens the course by about 30 metres, which is a handful of seconds at any pace, so the Race seg sets the exact figure and any other distance can be typed in either unit. The splits assume an even pace: they are the plan for the day, not a prediction of it, and the chart is the same arithmetic run across a whole range of finish times.

Common questions

What pace is a 4-hour marathon?
5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile: 4:00:00 is 14,400 seconds, divided by 42.195 km. The same division gives 4:59 per km (8:01 per mile) for 3:30:00, 4:16 per km (6:52 per mile) for 3:00:00 and 7:07 per km (11:27 per mile) for 5:00:00. All of these are rows in the chart under the tool.
Is a marathon 26.2 miles?
It is 42.195 km, which is 26.2188 miles. Typing 26.2 miles gives a course about 30 metres short, which at 4-hour pace is around ten seconds. The Race seg sets the exact distance in whichever unit is selected, and the splits and chart use that figure.
Can I get mile splits for a course marked in kilometres?
Yes. The splits follow the distance unit seg, not the pace unit, so switch the distance to mi and the 42.195 km becomes 26.2188 miles with a row per mile and a finish row for the last 0.22. Switch back to km for a row per kilometre. The pace seg is separate, so the headline can stay per mile while the splits read per kilometre, or the reverse.
Do the splits allow for slowing down late in the race?
No. Every kilometre in the table takes the same time; that is what an even split means. Most marathons are run with a slower second half, so if you want a cushion, treat the even split as the average and plan the first half a few seconds per kilometre faster than the table shows.
Where does the marathon chart start and stop?
At 2:30:00 and 6:00:00, every five minutes, which covers almost every finisher of a big city marathon. Each row divides its finish time by 42.195 km for the pace and shows the same effort per mile and as a speed in km/h and mph. The row matching the time in the calculator is highlighted.

Pace, time and distance are solved exactly from the two you give, and splits assume an even pace. Race distances are the official ones: a half marathon is 21.0975 km.
