All 53 fruit were typed out by hand for this page, alongside the 210 dishes, sides, snacks, puddings, drinks and vegetables that make up the 263 names the food generator holds. Nothing is fetched while you use it and no other generator's word list was copied. Each line had to pass one test before it went in: would somebody reading it know what it is without looking it up. That is why the shelf runs Strawberry, Pomelo, Damson and Dragon fruit rather than cultivar codes, and why there are 53 of them rather than 500.

Can I draw only red fruit, or only berries?

Yes, and that pair of controls is what fruit has that the rest of the tool does not. Fruit is the only category whose entries carry tags, so two extra rows appear with it: colour, with 6 to choose from, and form, with 7. Red holds 14 fruit, orange 11, green 10, purple 8, yellow 7 and brown 3. Berry and tropical hold 11 each, then citrus 9, stone 7, pome 6, other 5 and melon 4. The two filters stack, so Red and Berry together leave Strawberry, Raspberry, Cranberry, Red grapes and Redcurrant. 26 of the 42 pairings have at least one fruit in them; the other 16, Brown and Berry among them, come back with a line naming both filters rather than an empty screen.

Is a tomato a fruit here, or a vegetable?

A vegetable, and so are the cucumber, the pumpkin and the avocado, because these categories follow the kitchen rather than botany and a cook meets all four of those on the savoury side of a meal. Rhubarb goes the other way for the same reason: a stalk to a botanist, it is filed under fruit here because a kitchen stews it with sugar. The convention is stated rather than hidden, so if the botanical answer is what you came for, this is not the page that gives it. What it gives is a fruit to eat or to write down, filed where a cook would look for it.

Can the same fruit come up twice?

Not inside one draw. The list in play is shuffled and taken from the front, so every fruit on screen is a different one however many you ask for, up to 50 in a press. Press Draw again and the next round can overlap the last, because each press is its own round. If a filter leaves fewer fruit than you asked for, the tool hands back everything it has and says so: ask for 50 brown fruit and you get Kiwi fruit, Date and Coconut under the line "You asked for 50 and this list holds 3, so here are all 3."

Can I get the same fruit back later?

Type a word or a number into the Seed box and that round is repeatable: the same seed, category, colour and form give the same fruit in the same order, on this machine and on any other. Leave the box empty and the tool mints a number below 10,000 for each press and prints it under the name, so a set you liked can be written down and typed back in. Every index is drawn by rejection sampling rather than by a remainder, so no fruit gets an extra chance because of where it sits in the list.

Does it give calories, seasons or allergens?

No, and it does not pretend to. An entry holds four things: the name, the category it is filed under, the colour it shows when ripe and the form a kitchen groups it by. There are no calorie figures, no season tables, no ingredient lists and no allergen labels anywhere in the page, so anything you are going to cook is worth checking against the real ingredients in front of you. This is a page for deciding what to have, and it says what it holds rather than estimating what it does not.
