Common questions
- Where do these five-letter words come from?
- The 629 entries are the five-letter subset of a bundled 2,048-word English list selected from the public-domain ENABLE dictionary. Apple, beach and chair are entries. This is a curated list, not an official Wordle answer list or a complete game dictionary.
- Can I choose a starting letter or draw several words?
- Enter one A to Z letter in Starting letter, or leave it empty for any starting letter. How many takes whole numbers from 1 to 1000. With Repeats off, requests larger than the matching list show an error; with Repeats on, duplicate words are possible. The full result is selectable and Copy uses every word in order.
- Can I change the word length?
- Word length offers 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 letters. Three-letter words and words longer than eight letters are not included. Letters mode draws individual characters instead of dictionary words.
- Will this preset replace my saved letter settings?
- No. This page starts with its own settings and changes last for this visit. It neither reads nor overwrites the settings saved by the main Random Letter Generator page.
Every letter is drawn with the browser's cryptographic random source, so each is equally likely and a draw is not predictable from the ones before it. With repeats turned off the draw is a shuffle: each letter comes out once until the alphabet is used up.
