Minutes to Words Calculator
This page opens Target minutes with Speaking as the headline. Enter the time available and your speaking WPM to calculate a whole-word budget, rounded down. At 150 WPM a five-minute talk allows 750 words before pauses. Change the headline to Reading to plan a silent-reading budget from the separate reading pace.
Minutes multiplied by pace gives a whole-word budget. Leave room for pauses, slides and audience responses.

| Skim | 450 | 2,250 words | Reading for the gist rather than reading every word. |
Reading, speaking and page estimates
An article or chapter uses the silent-reading pace; a speech, voice-over or read-aloud script uses the speaking pace. For a known word count use Word count. For a reading assignment use Page count and enter your own average words per page. For a five-minute talk use Target minutes: at 150 WPM the budget is 750 words before pauses. A named book is not looked up automatically, and the tool does not run a timer or measure your reading speed.
Common questions
- How many words fit in a three-, five- or ten-minute speech?
- At 150 WPM, the budgets are 450, 750 and 1,500 words respectively. Edit the pace for your delivery and reduce the budget to leave time for pauses or audience interaction.
- Can I enter 2.5 minutes?
- Yes. At 150 WPM, 2.5 minutes allows 375 words before pauses. When multiplication produces a fraction of a word, the budget rounds down to the previous whole word.
- Does this include slide changes or questions?
- No. It multiplies speaking time by speaking pace. Use the time remaining after those activities, then rehearse the script.
Word counts are exact. Reading time is the count divided by the speed you choose, and the speed is the estimate; the 238 words a minute default is the measured adult average for silent reading. The reading-ease score uses a syllable estimate and is approximate.
