Page Reading Time Calculator
This page opens Page count. Enter the pages you plan to read, average words per page and your reading pace. The initial 250 words per page is an editable assumption, not a fact about every book. Estimated words equals pages times density; estimated minutes equals those words divided by WPM.
Count words on a representative page. Typography, illustrations and edition change the density; 250 is a starting assumption.

The same length at different reading speeds
| Speed | WPM | Reading time | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow | 150 | 16 min 40 sec | A careful read of unfamiliar or technical material, and about the pace of speech. |
| Average | 238 | 10 min 30 sec | Adult silent reading of English non-fiction, measured across 190 studies. |
| Fast | 300 | 8 min 20 sec | A confident reader on familiar material. |
| Skim | 450 | 5 min 30 sec | Reading for the gist rather than reading every word. |
Reading, speaking and page estimates
An article or chapter uses the silent-reading pace; a speech, voice-over or read-aloud script uses the speaking pace. For a known word count use Word count. For a reading assignment use Page count and enter your own average words per page. For a five-minute talk use Target minutes: at 150 WPM the budget is 750 words before pauses. A named book is not looked up automatically, and the tool does not run a timer or measure your reading speed.
Common questions
- How long does it take to read 100 pages?
- At 250 words per page and 238 reading WPM, 100 pages contains about 25,000 words and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Change density and pace for your edition and reading purpose.
- How do I estimate words per page?
- Count several representative full pages, excluding illustrations and blank space, then use their average. Academic pages, novels and comics have different densities. For better accuracy use an actual total word count.
- Can it look up a book or chapter for me?
- No. You supply pages or words; the tool has no title, edition or chapter database. This is a conditional estimate of reading time, not a book-specific lookup.
Word counts are exact. Reading time is the count divided by the speed you choose, and the speed is the estimate; the 238 words a minute default is the measured adult average for silent reading. The reading-ease score uses a syllable estimate and is approximate.
