The six shapes are theme plus a collection word, an adjective in front of that, the plus theme plus collection word, collection word for theme, theme and other plus a plural noun, and a volume mark on the end, and each name says beside it which shape built it. None of the twelve song shapes is reused here, so an album name is a different object from a song title rather than a longer one. The mood picks the vocabulary: wistful collects in Sessions, Tapes, Scrapbook, Memoirs, Reissue and Retrospective, while dark collects in Grimoire, Dirges, Tombside Recordings, Doom Cycle, Bone Archive and Winter Rites. One theme in one mood can make 108 different names and 864 across all eight moods, of which a single draw shows up to 50. Every name is checked against a list of 130 very well known song and album titles and dropped if it matches, which is the only thing that list does: it is a refusal list, never material, and it cannot tell you whether a name is already taken. - What does Album mode change?
- The field and the grammar. The topic box becomes a Theme box, because what an album title names is the thread every track shares rather than the moment one song describes, and the twelve song shapes are swapped for six of their own: Rain Retrospective, Golden Rain Tapes, The Rain Scrapbook, Sessions for Rain, Rain and Other Cassettes, and Rain Memoirs, Vol. I. Not one shape is shared with the song list. Those six draw on three of the mood's word banks, its 10 adjectives, its 6 plural nouns and its 6 collection words, plus the four volume marks Vol. I to Vol. IV. Press Song in the control under the headline and the same theme, mood and seed build song titles instead, which is the comparison the third check row on the page keeps on screen for you.
- Is the album name I get already taken?
- This page cannot tell you, and it does not check anything to find out. It reads no catalogue, no music service and no register of any kind, because it runs entirely in your browser from word lists that ship with it: whether a name is already an album, a band's back catalogue or somebody's registered mark is a question about the world, not about this generator. What the page does do is refuse. A list of 130 very well known song and album titles sits in the code purely so a draw cannot hand one of them back, and a leading The, the letter case and the punctuation do not get around it. A name you plan to put on a release is still worth a search of your own.
- How many album names can one theme give me?
- 108 in a single mood, and 864 across all eight, for any theme you type. The shapes account for that exactly: 6 collection words give 6 plain names, 6 more with the in front and 6 in the collection word for theme shape; the 10 adjectives multiply the collection words into 60; the 6 plural nouns give 6 of the and other shape; and the four volume marks turn 6 collection words into 24. One draw shows up to 50 of them, and the words are drawn from a bag rather than rolled like a die, so a list of twelve spreads the collection words over the bank instead of leaning on one. Change the seed for a fresh cut of the same 108, or change the mood for a different 108.
- What do the eight moods do to an album name?
- They replace the whole vocabulary. Each mood owns 50 written entries and shares none of them with another mood, 400 in all, and the three banks album mode reaches for are the ones you can hear the difference in: joyful collects in Jubilee, Fanfare, Anthems, Celebrations, Songbook and Mixtape, romantic in Serenades, Duets, Slow Set, Vows and Verses, Candlelight Sides and Love Notes, and playful in Funhouse, Bloopers, Doodles, Outtakes, Novelty Sides and Loose Ends. The grammars stay the same across all eight, which is what makes the moods comparable: the same six shapes filled from different words, so the same six shapes give Rain Memoirs in wistful and Rain Broadsides in defiant.
- How do I get the same list of album names back?
- Every list carries a seed, shown under the big name and in the Seed field. Press Generate and the tool picks a fresh four-digit seed and draws again; type a seed back in and the same theme, mood and format return the same names in the same order, on this machine and on any other. The seed is read as text, so 0012 and 12 are two different seeds, and only the surrounding spaces and the letter case are ignored, which means a seed can be read out loud to someone else. A seed can be any word or number up to 120 characters, and a longer one is refused with a message rather than quietly cut.
- Why does my theme have to be three words or fewer?
- Because the name has to fit around it. The theme is a slot inside a grammar, so a four-word theme pushes even the shortest shape past the length anyone reads as an album title. Up to 3 words and 48 characters go through, and anything longer comes back with a message that counts the words for you rather than trimming them behind your back. Letters, numbers, apostrophes, hyphens, ampersands and full stops are all allowed, and a word you capitalised yourself is left alone, so NASA stays NASA while rain becomes Rain.
- Does reading this page change the song title generator?
- No. The format is the one thing this page sets, and it sets it for this page only: until you press Song or Album in the control yourself, the format written back to this browser is the one you chose on the tool page, so the generator still opens where you left it. Your theme, mood, draw size and seed are remembered and do come back with you here. Names you star are kept for this tab alone and go when you close it, and each one records the mode it was kept in, so Copy kept writes every line out with album or song beside it and the two can never be mixed up.
Titles are assembled from phrase grammars and word lists written for this page, so the same topic, mood and seed always give the same list back. No corpus of real song titles is used and no availability is checked: a title here is a starting point, not a clearance.
