Common questions
- How many square feet are in an acre?
- 43,560, which is a square about 208.7 feet on a side. The acreage is the area in square feet divided by 43,560, so a lot 200 feet by 150 feet is 30,000 square feet and 0.689 acres, and a 660 by 660 foot parcel is exactly 10 acres.
- How do I work out acreage from length and width?
- Multiply the two sides for the area in square feet, then divide by 43,560. The page does both: type the length and the width, in feet and inches or in metres, and the acres are on the top line with the square feet under them. Sides can be written as 660, 660', 660 ft or 201.2 m, and a written unit wins over the ft / m switch.
- What if the land is not a rectangle?
- Split it into pieces you can measure: a rectangle for the main part, a triangle or a trapezoid for the odd corner, an L-shape for a notched lot. Add each piece as its own line and the acreage is the total. A curved boundary can be walked as a few straight runs and each run's piece added the same way.
- How many hectares is an acre?
- 0.405. A hectare is 10,000 square metres and an acre is 4,046.86 square metres, so hectares are acres times 0.4047. The page lists hectares under the total, converted through the international foot of exactly 0.3048 metres.
- Is this the survey acre or the international acre?
- Both are 43,560 square feet; the difference is in the foot. The US survey foot is two parts per million longer than the international foot, so a survey acre is about four parts per million larger. This page uses the international foot, and the difference is far below anything a tape or a plat can show.
- Can I put a price on the land?
- Yes, per square foot: type a price in the cost field and the cost line multiplies it by the total, to the cent. A price quoted per acre is that price divided by 43,560 per square foot. The figure is the price times the area and nothing else, with no fees, taxes or closing costs in it.
Areas are exact for the shapes and dimensions you give, and conversions use the international foot (0.3048 m) and the acre (43,560 square feet). Real rooms have alcoves and angles the shapes do not know about.
