Miles to Steps Calculator

One mile is 2,218 steps at the 2.38 ft step a 5 ft 9 in height gives. This page runs the conversion from distance to steps and opens on one mile: type any distance, switch Units to Km for kilometres, and the count follows from the stride named in the answer, which you can replace with one you have paced out.

The stride is the whole answer. Two step counters disagree about the same walk because they assumed different strides and printed neither. Here the stride is a field you can see: it starts at 0.414 of your height, the published walking figure, in centimetres, and a stride you pace out with the button above replaces it. Stride here means one step, not the two-step gait cycle some running literature calls a stride. No energy figure and no daily target: this page converts a count into a length and says what it assumed.

Common questions

How many steps are in a mile for my height?
It depends on your height more than anything else. Working one step out at 0.414 of standing height, a mile is 2,551 steps at 5 ft and 2,041 at 6 ft 3 in. A round 2.5 ft stride gives 2,112, and the familiar 2,000 is a 2.64 ft stride, longer than most people walk.
How many steps is 3 miles, or 5 miles?
At 5 ft 9 in, 3 miles is 6,654 steps and 5 miles is 11,090. Type the distance into the field and the count updates. The walking time shown with it assumes 4.8 km/h, so 3 miles reads about 1 h 0 m.
How many steps are in a kilometre?
1,378 at 5 ft 9 in, and 5 km is 6,891. Set Units to Km and the field takes kilometres instead of miles, with the miles equivalent still shown under the count.
How do I make the count match my own walk?
Press Measure a stride, walk a distance you know while counting your steps, and enter both: the stride field takes the result. If you already know your stride, type it into the Stride (cm) field. A height or stride you change is remembered in this browser for your next visit, while the distance is not.

Steps times stride length, converted to miles, kilometres or metres exactly, and reversible so miles come back as steps. It cannot know your stride, which changes with pace, terrain and shoes, so the distance is an estimate and the page names the stride it assumed.
