Easy Sudoku

Easy Sudoku for beginners and quick breaks: this page opens on the Easy level, where every 9×9 grid starts with 40 of its 81 digits already given. That leaves 41 squares to fill, and with that many givens most squares can be found by scanning a row, column or box for the one digit it is missing. Every puzzle has exactly one solution. Tap a square and a number, or use the keyboard; a repeated digit turns red straight away, Hint fills a square when you are stuck, and Undo takes back up to 80 steps. Print puzzle gives a clean sheet to solve on paper, and Print answers gives its answer key.

Choose a square, then press a number.

Keyboard: focus the board, use arrows to choose a square, then press 1–9. Notes are pencil marks kept in this browser. Every generated puzzle has exactly one solution; the level sets the clue count (Easy 40, Medium 33, Hard 28, Expert 24, now and then 25 or, rarely, 26). Print puzzle prints the starting grid without your entries; Print answers prints the solution.

Common questions

What makes this Sudoku easy?
It starts with 40 givens, more than the Medium (33), Hard (28) and Expert (24) levels, so fewer squares are empty and more of them can be filled by simple scanning. Clue count is the setting, not a timed rating, so an occasional Easy grid takes longer than expected.
How should a beginner start?
Pick a digit, say 1, and look at each 3×3 box that does not have it yet. Rule out the rows and columns that already hold a 1; when only one empty square is left in that box, the 1 goes there. Repeat for each digit, then look for squares with only one possible digit.
Can I check my answers or get help?
A digit that repeats in a row, column or box turns red as soon as you enter it. Hint fills the selected square from the solution and marks the session assisted, and Undo restores the last digit or note.
Can I print easy Sudoku puzzles?
Yes. Print puzzle prints the starting grid of the current puzzle in black and white without your entries, and Print answers prints the solution on its own sheet. Press New puzzle for another easy grid before printing again.

Every generated puzzle has exactly one solution, checked by a solver before each clue is removed, and every given agrees with that solution. Conflicts are checked by row, column and 3×3 box; the level sets the clue count, which is not a measured human solving time.
