Remove Line Breaks

Remove unwanted line breaks from selectable text copied from a PDF, document, message or editor. This preset normalizes line endings, rejoins matching hyphenated words, joins wrapped lines, collapses repeated spaces and trims line edges. Blank-line paragraphs are kept initially; switch off Keep paragraphs to make one paragraph. There is no direct file import.

Steps, in the order they run

Each one is a switch, and the number beside it is what that step changed in your text. The order is fixed and runs top to bottom, because cleaning is not order free: no-break spaces become ordinary spaces before repeated spaces are collapsed, and a hyphenated word is rejoined while the line break is still there to see.

What you cannot see is what breaks things. A no-break space looks exactly like a space and stops a line wrapping where it should. A byte order mark at the front of a paste turns into a stray character in a CSV. Windows line endings are invisible until a script reads the file and finds a carriage return on every line. Each of those is its own step here, with its own count, so you can tell what was in the text rather than guess.

Common questions

How do I remove all line breaks?
Switch off Keep paragraphs when line breaks are removed. Blank-line-separated sections are then joined with spaces too. To remove spaces as well, enable Remove every space, which runs words together.
Does it repair every hyphenated word copied from PDF?
It rejoins a letter, a line-end hyphen and a lowercase letter after the break. Review genuine hyphens and reading order manually. It cannot repair OCR mistakes or infer a document layout.
Can I clean line breaks in a text file?
Open the file, copy its text and paste into Before. Copy returns the complete cleaned result. Save .txt writes UTF-8 text and adds a final newline if absent, so the downloaded file can end with LF even after prose breaks were removed.
What happens to saved settings?
This preset controls the opening steps and paragraph setting. Editing text preserves the remembered values; explicitly choosing steps, a mode or the paragraph option saves that choice.
