Common questions
- Which letters are on this page?
- Every letter from U+00C0 to U+017F whose Unicode name is a base letter with a mark, under that letter: à á â ã ä å ā ă ą and their capitals under A, for example. The French row has à â æ ç é è ê ë î ï ô œ ù û ü ÿ, their capitals and the « » quotation marks. The letters in this range that are not a base letter plus a mark, such as ß, æ, œ, ð, þ, ij and ŋ, are under Other Latin letters, and the dotless ı sits with I.
- How do I type accented letters without copying them?
- On a Mac, an iPhone or an Android phone, press and hold the letter to choose its accented forms. On Windows, the US-International keyboard layout turns ' then e into é, ` then a into à, " then u into ü and ~ then n into ñ. On a Chromebook, press Ctrl, Shift and U, type the code point shown here without the U+, such as 00E9 for é, then press Space or Enter.
- Is é one character or two?
- Every letter here is one precomposed code point, such as U+00E9 for é, which is what keyboards usually produce. The same letter can also be written as e followed by U+0301 COMBINING ACUTE ACCENT: it looks the same but is different text to a computer comparing them. This page copies exactly the code points you pick and never converts one form into the other.
- Where are letters that are not in these rows, such as ǎ or ạ?
- They are later in Unicode, in Latin Extended-B and Latin Extended Additional. Type part of the name in the search box, such as a with caron, and the full names file loads so you can pick them the same way.
Names, code points and categories come from the Unicode Character Database 17.0.0, served from this site under the Unicode License v3, and the text you copy holds exactly the code points listed, with characters above U+FFFF kept whole. How a character looks depends on the fonts on your device, so an empty box can mean a missing font rather than a missing character, and invisible characters are labelled because they cannot be seen. Keyboard Alt codes are not listed, since they differ by system and layout.
