MB to TB Converter

MB to TB is one division, and the number you divide by depends on which megabyte and which terabyte you mean. In binary, a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes and a tebibyte (TiB) is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, so the step between them is 1,048,576, which is 1,024 × 1,024. In decimal, a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes and a terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, so the step is a flat 1,000,000. Windows and most file managers report the binary sizes and label them MB and TB, while drive and phone makers sell the decimal ones. This page opens with Mebibyte in the From box and Tebibyte in the To box, ahead of whatever pair you last used, so 1,048,576 MiB reads exactly 1 TiB, 500,000 MiB reads 0.476837158203 TiB and 2,000,000 MiB reads 1.90734863281 TiB. The decimal reading is never hidden behind a setting: the list under the headline prints the same amount in bits, bytes, kB, MB, GB, TB, KiB, GiB and TiB together, so 500,000 MiB shows as 0.476837158203 TiB and 0.524288 TB on one screen.

Common questions

How many MB are in a TB?
1,000,000 in decimal and 1,048,576 in binary, and this page carries both. A decimal terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes and a decimal megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, so the answer is a flat million. The binary pair, properly named the tebibyte and the mebibyte, is 2 to the 40th power over 2 to the 20th, which is 1,048,576. A file manager that writes TB and MB is usually counting the binary way.
What is the formula for MB to TB?
TiB = MiB / 1,048,576 for the binary reading and TB = MB / 1,000,000 for the decimal one. Reversed, MiB = TiB × 1,048,576 and MB = TB × 1,000,000, which is what the swap button sets up. The page opens on the binary pair, and choosing Megabyte and Terabyte in the two menus moves the decimal reading into the headline, though both are already in the list under the answer.
Worked example: what is 500,000 MB in TB?
Exactly 0.5 TB in decimal, and 0.476837158203 TiB in binary. Other sizes behave the same way: 250,000 MiB is 0.238418579102 TiB, 1,000,000 MiB is 0.953674316406 TiB and 2,000,000 MiB is 1.90734863281 TiB, while 2,000,000 MB is exactly 2 TB. The binary answer is always the smaller of the two, because a binary terabyte holds more bytes.
Why does 1 MB come back as 9.536743e-7 TB?
Because one mebibyte is a 1,048,576th of a tebibyte, and anything below 0.000001 is printed in exponential notation rather than as a row of leading zeros. 10 MiB sits just above that line and stays decimal at 0.00000953674316406 TiB, 100 MiB reads 0.0000953674316406 TiB and 1,024 MiB, which is 1 GiB, reads 0.0009765625 TiB. If the small figure is the problem, pick a nearer unit: 1 MiB is a clean 1,024 KiB or 1,048,576 bytes.
Why does my 2 TB drive show up as about 1.81 TB?
Because the box counted in decimal and the operating system is counting in binary. 2 TB is 2,000,000,000,000 bytes, which this page converts to 1.81898940355 TiB, and the file manager then labels that TB. The same gap gives 0.909494701773 TiB for 1 TB and 3.63797880709 TiB for 4 TB. Nothing is missing from the drive: it is one count of bytes under two definitions of the same word.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
1,000,000 bytes against 1,048,576 bytes, a gap of about 4.86 percent, so 1 MB is 0.953674316406 MiB and 1 MiB is 1.048576 MB. The IEC named the binary units in 1998, giving the kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte and tebibyte, and this converter lists both families side by side rather than picking a winner. The gap widens as the unit grows, reaching about 9.95 percent at the terabyte step.
How do I convert TB back to MB?
Press the swap button and the page becomes tebibytes to mebibytes: 1 TiB is 1,048,576 MiB and 2 TiB are 2,097,152 MiB. In decimal, 1 TB is 1,000,000 MB once Terabyte and Megabyte are picked in the two menus. Mixing the conventions is allowed too, and worth seeing once: 1 TB is 953,674.316406 MiB.
Which convention do Windows and macOS use?
Windows reports binary sizes and writes MB, GB and TB on them, so a 2 TB drive appears as about 1.81 TB in Explorer. macOS has counted storage in decimal since 2009, so the same drive reads about 2 TB in the Finder. Neither is wrong, they answer different questions about one byte count, and this page shows both readings at the same time.
Is anything I type uploaded?
No. The conversion is arithmetic against a table of exact factors that ships with the page, so it runs in your browser with no account and nothing sent anywhere, and it keeps working with no network connection once the page has loaded.

Conversion factors are the exact legal definitions where one exists. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm and a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg, so those conversions are exact rather than approximate. Temperature uses offsets rather than factors, and that is shown in the working.
